Nats Trade Rumor: Nyjer Morgan?

Nyjer a Nat?

Nyjer a Nat?

According to The Pittsburgh Post Gazette the Nationals are pursuing a trade for the Pirates outfielder Nyjer Morgan.  Negotiations appear ongoing, but Pittsburgh had come back asking for both former met Lastings Milledge and rookie starter Craig Stammens.  We here at NLEC will try to stay on top of this and get you any news regarding it.

Milledge is an interesting piece to ask for (heck, I wouldn’t mind if the Mets got him back). But Stammens seems like a lot to give up. Kid looks good.

Unless I am overrating him, it is tough to give up a potential stud young pitcher like that. Think the Twins might like to have Garza back?

the problem is if anyone can give up a potential stud, its the nats..they picked up at least two more possibly great new arrms in the draft
Also, I love Morgan, but whats funny is the Nats would be getting back a slightly older version of what Milledge COULD be, but with less power, lol

  2. I read an article about this proposed trade that stated that the reason the Pirates are willing to part with Morgan is that they have organizational OF depth. OK, that’s reasonable. But why get an OF back?

    grave,
Previous management left the Pirates farm system almost without any of prospects of value except for McCutchen.. Current management’s stated philosophy is to stockpile with the best talent they can get regardless of position. And to sell players at peak value (re: Bay, Nady, McLouth - now possibly Morgan) to get the best return.
Selling Morgan high (he’s 29) and buying Lastings low fits in with that plan. Don’t really get why the Nats would do this deal - don’t they have bigger problems?

Thanks, guys. I sure wish the Bucs were back in the NL East . Phlliies…Mets…Expos…those were the days.

From what I’ve seen so far it looks like the front office has been right more than they’ve been wrong in terms of talent evaluation. Based on that I’d say they did ok but only time will tell. They called McCutchen up and he’s a defensive upgrade and exciting player to watch so the disgruntled bobble-head set will chill out about McClouth a bit sooner. Morton is in the rotation and has looked very sharp so far - hopefully he’ll stay consistent - maybe be another Ohlendorf. It will take a couple years to tell with Locke and Gorkys. Even if the prospects don’t pan out I think they’re a bit better off. They are not going to compete this year so why not try to make yourself more competitive next year and beyond. In any case I sure like the idea of the trade.

I would have preferred they shop Nate around once they decided to trade him. They had scouted the Braves extensively as a potential Bay trading partner - so apparently when the Braves approached them they knew who they wanted and the offer was too good to refuse. I will give them credit for having the raisins to pull the trigger. They know what they want to do and they don’t give a rat’s hindquarters what the fans, gasbags on espn or current players think about it.

I used to have the MLB package and I recall the Pirate TV announcers on more than one occasion lamenting the fact that they were no longer in the East. They (if I recall correctly one gentleman was Bob Walk the former pitcher, I forget his partner’s name) were particularly upset about the starting times for division road games. It does seem unfair to have so many division foes in a different time zone.
