Time to turn the lights out on Lidge

Posted by mattsmith on 3:35pm, Wednesday August 26th 2009

Brad Lidge’s nightmare season continued Tuesday night as the Pirates rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to claim a 6-4 victory.

For the Phillies to succeed in the playoffs, Lidge absolutely cannot be the team’s closer. No way.

His nine blown saves leads all of baseball. So does his ERA among qualified relievers.

Lets avoid this, mmmk?

Let's avoid this, mmmk?

Let’s imagine that it’s Game 7 of the World Series. Phillies-Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Phillies lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the ninth.

Is Brad Lidge YOUR closer?

For the love of all things great about Philadelphia, I hope not.

The Phillies won’t even get to the World Series as long Lidge is out there getting rocked and blowing saves like it’s a hot trend or something.

I’ve said it before: Lidge’s honeymoon is over. I understand the guy had a longer-than-normal leash, what with being Mr. Perfect last season and all, but it’s time to move in another direction…. right now!

Here are two candidates that should get the opportunity

Brett Myers

Myers was effective as a closer in 2007, when he started the year as a starter before missing more than a month due to injury. When he returned, he got the job done. He’s looking forward to helping the team out of the bullpen in September and he is well on his way back from hip surgery earlier in the year.

Chan Ho Park

Yes, he was awful as a fifth starter in April, but Park has been dominant as a reliever. He has the stuff to close. Give him a shot.

Seriously, what harm would it do? Consider September an open audition.

Jose Mesa is not invited…

    Tom Gordon isn’t invited either.

Why even have a closer? Why not just let our relief pitch into the ninth and take the pressure off a single guy. Chan Ho comes into the seventh inning and finishes the game. Madson comes in the 8th and we let him close. Doesn’t make sense why we need a designated head case to put an exclamation point on it.

Agreed. I think the only problem with that is, you’ll be over working guys and at this point in the season, that might not be a great idea. I think the best option is Myers. He’ll be fresh and healthy (at least you hope).
