This week in the All-Star voting, there is not much change, in fact none in the vote getters. I’m gonna leave this one strictly for discussion because unless Rollins makes up over 200k votes there will not be any major upsets. One note though is that Soriano is only a bit over 150,000 votes behind Beltran, so even though Carlos wouldn’t start at this point, lets hope he gets the honor.

Go Hanley!
i might be alone on this but im goint to vote for soriano and get beltran out of the ASB. We need a healthy beltran more than this rediculous contest.
Then vote Victorino! Let him get hurt.
hahahaha
theres no chance he plays even if hes voted in…guaranteed
i hope your right. CB should be back before the ASB
Man, the NL is knee deep in great hitting 1B. Well, unless you’re the Delgado-less Mets.
Daniel Murphy is a great hitting 1B.
And for as long as he’s rewarded with a seat on the bench every time he gets hit, we’ll never really see the full extent of it.
That to me is one of the most obvious examples of Jerry Manuel’s failings as a manager. He is constantly saying words to the effect of “If he keeps hitting I’ll keep playing him” but this doesn’t seem to apply to Murphy.
exactly…
Its one thing i learned in very short order. Its one thing what jerrys says and another what he does. Murph has been shafted this whole year and i understand jerry is easing him into an mlb season but still. If a kid goes on a 5 rbi tear, you gotta play him the next day. Its about sending a message and right now, all the mets are getting the wrong signals.
…or Church.
wow, fatty francessa makes a point and this clueless caller Mike -”how good would Philly be if you take away Utley, Howard and Werth?” caller - “not as good”
not as good? understatement?
well…we see their struggles w/o ibanez on their team which he would be the equivalent of beltran or gado. Now take away
victorino-reyes
howard-gado
ibanez-beltran
moyer-perez
madson-jj putz
blanton-maine
and do you think they would be where they are…
Don’t forget:
Rollins-W.Valdez
haahaha..yea rollins is having a valdez type season lol
Do you realize how right you are?
.211 BA, .254 OBP, .328 SLG.
.208 BA, .269 OBP, .333 SLG.
Which is which?
It depends. You didn’t include the tell-all grit ratio.
I’m not an ESPN insider, I only hear about grit I never get to see the ratio
My favorite thing on ESPN Insider is the trade rumors section. I once saw a rumor that Carlos Beltran as a free agent may sign with: Angels, Phillies, Mets, Braves, Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, Mariners, Rockies, Dodgers, Padres, White Sox, Rangers, Royals, Pirates, Nationals, Marlins, and D-Backs. Thanks for the inside info, ESPN. That’s the day I cancelled.
lmaooo wow..i was kidding…umm im going to guess the .211 is rollins but if im wrong, either way its so close lol.
You are correct!
Yea, I’ll take W-Val on my team any day over J-Troll.
In case you missed it last week Rollins said he is the best SS in the NL.
Uh oh. Everything he says comes true (unlike Jerry Manuel).
Jerry Manuel is still trying to “eye-dentify”and “rectify the situation at hand” by analyzing all of the “available data.”
Have I told you that you do a fantastic written impression of Jerry? Cuz you do.
Been trying to identify and rectify where i could do better. I think once that happens, we will be in a much better place. But I’m confident in this ballclub. Yea. I’m confident.
Yeah, earlier today he said to a caller words to the effect of “why be rational? You’re a fan, it’s fun to be irrational. But don’t expect an owner and a general manager to look at the roster irrationally and make irrational decisions, that’s not their job, it’s yours as a fan.”
i’d say more like ibanez, howard, and utley this year. all of their punch. even though reyes isn’t a power hitter per se, he is a line drive and extra base hitter.
As far as voting for Beltran or not, I checked and the only All-Star related incentive in his contract is he gets $100,000 if he receives the most total votes in the NL. So if you want to save the Wilpons 100 grand don’t vote for him. If you want to spite them, get voting!
I think he needs the $100K to get that mole removed.
Who is it in the famous story that loses their strength when they lose their hair, Samson? For Beltran, if he loses the mole he loses his strength.
the mole must stay!
I bet the team dermatologist is Dr. Van Nostrand.
I think any Met that gets selected should stay home to rest. THey all need it!
I Don’t like Jerry. He gets on my nerves, and I just can’t see how he adds any value. Can anyone think of a move he made that you say “wow, smart guy, that got them a win!” I’m sure though there are pelnty of “what a bone head move” moments that come to mind.
The free agent list from an earlier thread was not particulary exciting. ANd that is another big reason not to unload a bunch of prospects for a rental. They are going to need them to build a decent team for 2010.
And I am not supporting a go for broke long shot at the post season, to heck with the future, plan. Fine to make a trade, but it better be for someone with at least another year or 2 on the contract.
I also wouldn’t be upset if Evans became the regular 1B, if Murphy isn’t going to keep the job. At least it is a RH bat with some pop.
And I do think a “Citi team” can live without a bunch of big HR mashers. A line drive gap hitter should thrive in this park. Doubles and triples galore. Frnakly, it is what Reyes should be, when he isn’t swinging for the fences and popping up all the time.
If Murphy gets back to the flashes he showed last year, he could fit the mold too.
SO, which of the FAs, or trade possibilities, fits that mold? At least for the Met prospects, F Mart and even Thole seem to be that type of hitter
Sadly, if Omar is still in charge, I expect the big off season moves to be signing Vlad, and re-upping Delgado.
I’ll concentrate solely on hitters, leaving pitchers for some other time.
Based on contracts, 1B and C are the obvious openings. After those, LF and RF have no sure things for the future, with Tatis and Sheffield expiring, and Church and Reed still arbitration eligible and therefore easily released if one chooses to do so.
I am going to assume for the sake of discussion that FMart takes one of those corner spots. I can’t begin to speculate on off season trades now, so I’ll stick to free agents. So, we want to fill 1B, C and COR OF:
of the available 1B, the one I find most attractive is Adam LaRoche, but as you pointed out, this could be Evans/Murphy in house.
of the available C, I don’t see how Thole will be ready next season so we need a 1 or 2 year guy. Bengie Molina is terribly slow and barely gets on base, but at least he has some pop. I guess I could accept him in a transitional phase.
of the available OF, I covet Jason Bay but I imagine he’ll stay in Boston. That leaves Matt Holliday as the best option, with Rick Ankiel as a distant second in my opinion. Guerrero is a DH. Unless Andruw Jones is truly back, I don’t see who else helps. Abreu?
They’re going to realistically fill at least one hole by trade, all the more reason to not spend chips now, which makes someone, if not actually Pierre, someone in his situation which would make the cost low, more viable.
I’d like a lineup of:
SS - Reyes
2B - Orlando Hudson (4 yrs/ $40MM)
3B - Wright
CF - Beltran
LF - Holliday
RF - FMart
1B - Evans
C - Santos/Backup
Send Castillo to Houston (who tried to sign him as well) for a minor league reliever and give them cash ($6MM). Let Church go and keep Reed.
you can’t give Hudson a 4 year deal at age 33/34. If he stays in 1 piece this season, 2 years max (to replace Castillo). Not sure how much of a real upgrade it wil lbe, but it’s a start.
Evans might surpirsie some people too. And at lest he is cheap.
I really don’t see Holliday here though. But who knows how the contract offers play out (I guess ow bad the Stanks want him will be a big factor)
Sign a stop gap for C (keep Santos), and if they fill 1B in house, make the big move for a corner OF (trade), hopefully being at least a partial salary dump (to ease the prospect load).
Why would Houston want Castillo? They already have Kaz!
If Houston wants a 2B, they’d rather sign Hudson themselves. They’re not stupid.
Omar cannot and will not get rid of Castillo unless Mets eat pretty much all of his contract.
If Thole continues to hit .350 they’ll have to consider him for the big club despite his lack of/developing defensive prowess. Omir can be his late inning caddy and the Mets can carry a third catcher who can serve as a pinch hitter/emergency replacement.
IIRC, Thole is converted to C (or maybe he was a C in HS, played something else in the pros, then went back?)
In any case, maybe he can serve double duty. BU 1B? Emergency OF? anything that would give him more value and some roster flexibility
Prince Fielder will be entering into the last year of his contract after this season (which I think would have been his last season of arb eligibility but I could be wrong).
Perhaps Milwaukee will seek to move him while his value is at its highest and the Mets can put together an offer headed by Fernando Martinez (who is proving capable in CF and could replace Cameron), one of Brad Holt of Jenrry Mejia and Jon Niese.
That’s giving up way to much. And Fielder is not FA after this season.
Prince Fielder 1b
2 year/$18M (2009-10)
* 2 years/$18M (2009-10)
o signed extension with Milwaukee 1/23/09 (avoided arbitration, $8M-$6M)
o $1M signing bonus
o 09:$6.5M, 10:$10.5M
o performance bonus: $0.5M for 500 PAs
“entering into the last year of his contract after this season”
I don’t think that’s too much from Milwaukee’s perspective of trading a signed 50 HR hitting young player.
Ahhh.. I should read before I reply… duh..
I still think that’s giving up too much for an out of shape 1st baseman. Plus Brewers have no incentive to trade him.
Their incentive may be that he will be too expensive for them to retain beyond 2010 and to maximize his value by trading him after this season while he has a whole season left on his deal (as opposed to waiting until next July).
But Brewers are in it for sure this season. No way they get rid of their power guy.
“maximize his value by trading him after this season”
He may be fat but he’s only 25 and working on his second 1.000 OPS season.
Wanny do you have any idea if they have an up and coming 1B in their system who’s presence might facilitate their trading him?
Matt Gamel is already there…
So they would move him? Because as far as I understand he’s a 3B.
I don’t know if they would move him. But they love Gamel’s bat (307 .379 .500 career in minors) and they have questions as to whether he can handle 3B.
oh my god..
this guy on the fan just said to trade fmart and maybe ollie for Vernon Wells… REALLY?
you could have Wells for some used BP balls. Or GM Jr., and he comes with a bag of balls!
Argenis Reyes leading off. AWESOME!!!! I LOVE JERRY!!!@!#!@@!#@!
TRS will love it!!!
Thanks for saving me the trouble of watching the game tonight.
Why the heck is Reyes batting first and Castillo 8th? Does Jerry really think Reyes has a better chance of getting on base than Castillo?
Please fire this guy.
I’m starting to think he wants to get canned now, to get the rest of the summer off.
Hey, he gets paid regardless, and probably knows he is getting the boot at the end of the year, so why not?
Either tht, or he is going to tank as much as possible, to make sure and pin the rap on Omar and the injuries, so they can’t fire him?
I give up I guess trying to understand what goes through (or doesnt go through) his mind.
Reyes, ss
Murphy, 1b
Wright, 3b
Sheffield, lf
Church, rf
Martinez, cf
Schneider, c
Castillo, 2b
Nieve, rhp
Maybe that’s why he’s seen talking to Willie by the batting cage. Wondering what the life is like outside of NY Mets organization.
Yes. Jerry is basing his decision on Reyes’ ability to get on base by BUNTING!
Listening to DNL.
- Delgado was suppose to be a guess today but had to cancel b/c of a scheduling conflict.
- Seriously talking about a Redding/Ollie tandem for the 5th starter when Ollie returns - which should be after one more rehab start. Supposedly, Redding starting the game, Ollie reliving him.
- John Maine completely shut down. Will see a doctor on Thursday. Depending on the news, might be able to start throwing off a flat surface - not even the mound. (so here’s hoping Nieve has yet another good start tonight).
- FMart was dangerously close to be sent down, but Angel Pagan is not as close to coming back as originally thought, so will probably see FMart around longer than anticipated.
Lots of Great NEWS! Yipee~~
What’d DNL?
“Daily News Live” on SNY.
Oh thanks. Things are really looking up now.
daily news live
Sorry….I see my fellow Met fans have clarified by acronym for you.
Nieve sure has not had an easy first four starts. Pitching in Milwaukee against Prince and Braun is no easier task than against the rivals he had faced before.
Yes, he hasn’t had it easy. So far, he’s been up to the task. I hope tonight goes well for him so I don’t need to remind myself that every pitcher throws a stinker sometimes, and I don’t have to spend much time tomorrow reading about how “the bubble has burst” and “the honeymoon is over.”
The question is will Jerry, who is quick to sit Murphy and Church after minor failures, have enough faith to give him another shot?
Your guess is as good (OK, better) than mine.
My guess is if he has a poor start tonight the organization can/will use it as an excuse to promote Ollie.
My guess is no better than yours and, in fact, I agree with you.
OK, as regards Jerry our guesses likely have equal value. I was still thinking somewhat about our Mat Gamel chat when I wrote that, and I put more stock in your guesses about recently promoted minor leaguers from other organizations than I do my own.
I appreciate the confidence, but I can only comment on what I’ve read. Unfortunately, my career (and wife) don’t allow for much of a minor league stadium tour!
re: jerry, there’s no formula that could be developed to predict his management. all you can guess is that he will do something not only counterintuitive but most likely not very well thought out.
Even Kevin B. on the pregame show sounds pretty dejected about this team right now….
Saying, unless they pull a trigger on a trade, this is as good as it gets right now. Or unless there is someone in the minors than can have an impact. This is a big week for the Mets, before the ASB, playing good teams.
Talking about morale. Doesn’t like this whole ‘hanging around and seeing if they can get it done’. Wants to see an impact player be added NOW.
Says we don’t even know what we’ll get when the ‘core’ on the DL gets back, if they’ll even get it done.
Talking about the pressure on DWright and how he’s feeling it right now.
He really sounds disgusted. Join the ranks of us lowly Met fans, Kevin.
I’m just crossing my fingers we can stay close b/c I do believe when we get back some of these players, it will make a world of difference…..
The thing is it doesn’t have to be as bad as having Argenis Reyes batting leadoff.
The problem is not only being shorthanded but making things worse by plugging square pegs into round holes.
Hey folks…been out of the picture for a while. Man, it’s strange to be two games out of first and have such a down mood about the team. The Phillies must really stink to not be able to pull away, huh?
The all-star break can’t come soon enough. Carlos Beltran better not go, man. I have a feeling he’s not going to be ready to play anyway.
