Record: 3-0 Era: 1.31 K: 13 BB: 9 WHIP: 0.97

Mets Notes:

  • Nieve keeps chilling opponents’ bats, holding the Cardinals scoreless on three hits in six innings to improve to 3-0 in three starts in place of the disabled John Maine. Nieve has given up just 10 hits in 20 2/3 innings as a starter this season and has lowered his ERA to 1.31. Nieve is 1-0 with a 4.00 ERA in three career appearances against the Brewers, including one start. Back on May 2, 2006, Nieve allowed four runs on six hits in seven innings at Miller Park, earning the win for the Astros.
  • Nieve’s only previous start against the Brewers was a memorable one on May 2, 2006, at Miller Park. He allowed four runs over seven innings to earn his first major league victory, 8-5 with Houston.
  • The Mets (37-37) have fallen to the .500 mark for the first time since May 6 after scoring three runs while being swept over the weekend at home by the New York Yankees. They are starting a seven-game trip, and continue to be without regulars Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado and Jose Reyes.

Brewers Notes:

  • Milwaukee’s Braden Looper tries to avoid finishing with a winless June. Looper is 0-1 with a 7.18 ERA in five starts this month since his last win May 29 against Cincinnati. The right-hander gave up three runs over six innings Wednesday in a 4-3 win over Minnesota. He suffered a contusion on his right triceps after being hit by a line drive in the fifth, but said that he would be OK.
  • Looper, a former Met, has made one start and 46 relief appearances against New York, going 3-1 with a 2.35 ERA. The lone start came with St. Louis on April 4, 2007, when he allowed three runs over six innings in a 10-0 loss.

    AReyes leading off? Sigh….
I guess you have to give Jerry 2 points for creativity but does anyone think this will be any kind of advantage?

  2. saltygary says:

I handled this weekend OK but if they love to F’n Looper I’m gonna be ripped. LG u effing Mets!!!!

  3. Kingman 26 says:

OK, I am back with the optimists, but Argenis Reyes is not a major league player.

He does not belong on the team, in any situation, ever.

  4. Wow, the middle infield right now is A. Reyes and Tatis. Wow.

  5. sabermetrician says:

Okay, so we lose for the fourth straight day. Nieve should have some value left despite getting hammered. If we can trade Nieve and Murphy for something I’d be pretty stoked. There’s no reason to think we can’t send Nieve and Murphy to KC for Teahen, maybe throw in one more prospect. Omar needs to make a move soon. I realize it’s extremely difficult right now, but if we don’t do something soon it may be too late.

    • Kingman 26 says:

Yeah, there ain’t too much sand left in our hourglass….

    • When the “regular” Mets get healthy, Teahen is an excellent bench player to have, but until that time, I don’t see how he helps much. If he plays every day til the end of the season (in a normal ballpark) I’d expect .270 with 8 or 9 home runs.

      • fongy2 says:

at least hes a professional baseball
        player. Any little bit
        would help right now.
So long as it doesnt cost FMart,Parnell,
        Niese,Holt or Mejias.

        • Good point. At this stage I’m far less concerned with who they bring in, and far more concerned with what it costs. If we keep the family jewels intact, bring in whoever is a bona fide major league ballplayer.

        • steveo says:

Nothing will help its over Brian Stokes isn’t very good Fernando Neive has proven why he was dumped by the astros but thanks for the 3 great starts. I think the mets should skip Johan tommorow why waste precious pitches from his valuable arm. Guys its over shut the tvs donate the met tickets to charity. And prey for 2010 realy prey that omar is assigned to vp duties only and hire a proven gm one that has built a successful franchise.

          • sabermetrician says:

I don’t think this season is done yet, but we are dangerously close. We just don’t have enough major league talent at this point. The sad thing is, we started this season with a minor leaguer in left field when there were a ton available on the free agent market. We don’t sign Ollie, we could have had Dunn and Hudson with Luis as a bench player. And we’d only be on the hook for 2 years and 1 year, respectively.

          • Kingman 26 says:

Well Steve, “prey” that we get another GM who can build a team with Johan, KRod, Beltran, and Delgado, steal a Maine, and build a really solid bench, and who has the wisdom to sign Wright and Reyes to VERY affordable long-term deals.

            • steveo says:

Lets see Reyes and Wright would have been signed to an extension by anybody with a heart beat .Beltran was about waiving money at a player remember he was going to the yanks when omar committed to another year and 20 mil,Delgado was someone who didnt want to come here in 2005 thats why he signed with the marlins and we got him in a salary dump .Johan again was a move that whoever sent the most got the rights to talk to him it was like signing a free agent .Maine was a great move and Im not bagging on Omar because he has done more for this team in 5 years than any of the previous at the top of the helm but I still think he would be better at vp a title I think he holds as well. The thinking mans job is for a proven frachise builder.Omar and his great personality (and I really do mean that) should be there for wooing potential players which he does do well.and milking more money from team ownership which he does well.

  6. Well, anyone familiar with my “work” knows that I am an optimist. But that GS by McGehee, when we look back on it after the season, that was the last nail in the coffin of this team. Only if the Mets come back and win this game will I believe otherwise.

  7. sabermetrician says:

Has anyone heard anymore on Beltran’s second opinion? The way things are going I won’t be surprised if we hear tomorrow that he’s out for the year.

  8. steveo says:

Wow parnell was a trade chip till tonight

  9. fongy2 says:

HELP OMAR! THE SHIP BE SINKIN’!

I should really wait until we find out if this is legit.. but I thought I would post it anyways… K-ROD say it aint so..

  11. dentulous says:

man, WTF is wrong with our bullpen? They cost us the game IMO.

  12. dentulous says:

This is killing me, there is not one part of this team that is shining right now, our offense sucks, the bullpen has gone from one of the best to a piece of garbage, and our starting pitching has been meh.

    When it rains, it pours…..

  13. tkfj says:

Bunch of everyday A rod’s out there. Getting RBI’s and hits in a 10-3 game. Way to do it when it doesnt make a difference in the outcome.

Woo. I love me some MESS.
