Game Thread: Mets (38-39) vs Pirates (36-42) Make Up Game-Rain Delay Again
Posted by dirtysanchez on 12:25pm, Thursday July 2nd 2009

Game Time: 12:35 pm

Record: 1-3 Era: 6.35 K: 30 BB: 19 WHIP: 1.48
Mets Notes:
- It all fell apart for Redding in a hurry on Saturday against the Yankees. After giving up two hits in the first five innings, Redding allowed four runs on four hits on four consecutive pitches in the sixth, leading to a 5-0 Yankees’ win. Redding is 2-2 with a 3.79 ERA in 11 career starts against the Pirates, including an 0-1 mark with a 6.38 ERA in five starts at PNC Park. Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson owns a .385 career average against Redding in 26 at-bats. Redding is glad to finish June — historically his worst month — and enter July, when he’s 9-11 with a 4.91 ERA in his career.
- The Mets (38-39) are tied with Pittsburgh (36-42) for last in the majors with 49 homers. The Mets’ lineup averaged 2.4 runs in losing five straight to close out last month, and had just five hits Thursday in Milwaukee.
- Redding is 0-1 with a 6.38 ERA in five outings in Pittsburgh and Wilson is hitting .385 (10 for 26) versus him.

- Record: 5-4 Era: 4.35 K: 63 BB: 33 WHIP: 1.42
Pirates Notes:
- After laboring through much of June, Maholm closed it out with a bang in his final start of the month. Not only did Maholm snap a personal two-game losing streak, but he did it with the benefit of his sinker, a pitch that had eluded him at times this month. Maholm was also notably efficient, as he typically is when he’s at his sharpest. Maholm is 3-2 with a 3.65 ERA in six career starts against the Mets. Paul Maholm faced the Mets on May 9 in New York, yielding seven runs and 10 hits over five innings in a 10-1 loss. He’s 3-2 with a 3.65 ERA in six career starts versus the Mets. Maholm is 3-1 with a 1.96 ERA in six home starts this season, and he looked solid there against Kansas City on Friday. The left-hander gave up two runs and five hits over seven innings in a 6-2 win.

Three games with this team — I know they’re a big-league ballclub, but we’re better than them. We’re better than them. And we know we’re better than them, but we have to do something about it

This would actually be a huge win. This would be doing something we haven’t really done this year: comeback.
Bench Castillo!
And play A. Reyes? You’ve been playing this card too long ‘09. Did you see yesterday’s game? Have you been watching this season. Castillo has been pretty good for us. Much better than Murphy.
Seriously. Yesterday you (TA ‘09) named 30 2B you’d rather have than Castillo. Just because you’d rather have them doesn’t mean they’re better. In fact in that thread I outlined how 12 of the names you brought up are clearly worse than Castillo. So is he great? Absolutely not. But he’s serviceable and he’s having a productive year in the context of what he’s capable of, which is getting on base and stealing bases. He came to camp in better shape and apologetic about previously not being so. He manned up on the dropped pop up against the Yankees. Yes there are better players, but they are not viable and or available options for the Mets. This team has plenty of people to pick on who deserve it. Why you and Stickguy continue to focus on Castillo is beyond me.
Castillo is the last guy the Mets need to do anything about right now.
Frankie’s standard, let the first guy reach. It’s usually fine, but the way Jones is hitting today it’s a bit scary.
Or LaRoche. Damn it.
You have got to be kidding me.
Since the Luis drop Frankie has been shaky.
ugh
I was just thinking before that that this would be probably the worst day to blow one, being we only have Bobby former 100 in the pen….
No pinch hitters left and only Parnell in the pen.
Frankie will have to make it through two now.
Indeed. Is there a correlation or was K-Rod just due to struggle some too?
And don’t forget he let two runners on before Castillo dropped A-Rod’s pop-up.
I came here to type that exact line.
Feel free to join in my disbelief, frustration and weeping.
are they chanting “k-rod”?
Yes, Keith noted this on the broadcast. Until he did, I thought they were chanting “pay-roll.”
Looks like Ryan Church will be benched for the Philly series!
yeah, he wont be in the lineup for a while…. haha
My God Finally. boy Frankie…..46 pitches in 2 innings, least hes got some endurance. Nice comeback win guys.
Frankie with a blow save and the W. Baseball is a funny game…
Tatis and Church! Woo-Hoo. Tatis deserves the masseuse on the plane ride back. Poor guy is probably all black and blue.
Must score many runs off Lopez tomorrow night as it’s a sure bet KRod is not available.
Eddie Coleman just said “Great performance by Frankie Rodriguez.”
Huh?
Man I hope he gets i together during his day off.
hu sucked in the 9th. 4 hits, and a couple of smoked outs?
At least 4 balls crushed (the 1st hit ws lucky).
wonder if the Pirates GM called Omar in the 9th to see if he wanted to take Laroche to Philly with him?
perhaps “epic” would’ve been more appropriate
ugly, but right now, any way they win is fine. although don’t expect K Rod to sit tomorrow, even though he really should.
Just have a laugher and not need him!
Hope the braves win and nats lose now, so only 1 out.
And after the the way they played the last week, that is truly amazing.
Nice to see some O for a change. And having Church hot is great.
You say it’s ugly…I say the Mets came back from a 5-run deficit to win a game in extras.
yes, that part was good.
let me rephrase: Fantastic game by the Mets, other than Redding and K Rod who were ugly.
Better?
Well…Krod had one great inning!
