Man Up Awards For Saturday

Posted by dirtysanchez on 12:00pm, Sunday July 12th 2009

First up is Johan Santana. I guess Johan wants to get the second half started early. Johan went 7 inning with no earned runs and 5 punch outs. Im not sure if it was all Johan or the Mets who committed no errors in this start. In any event, its no secret that Johan pitches much better in the second half. In his career, he is 58-17 with a 2.70 Era and a 1.05 WHIP after the all-star break. The Mets will need 49 wins to end the season with 90 wins. Now if this is possible most likely will be debated but we can all agree that we will need every bit of the second half Johan Santana

Next up is Frenchy. Jeff said he was excited to play in New York and wasted no time in “earning his stripes” by delivering with the bases loaded to get 2 runs in. Jeff went 2-4 in his Mets debut with 2 RBI’s. The Mets said Jeff Francoeur just needed a change of scenery….something that Met fans can understand with one of their own Aaron Heilman. Jeff was a big time rookie that had several good campaigns with the Atlanta Braves. We should know…as he hit .283 against us. We can only hope that Jeff rediscovers his swing that 3 years ago had him hit 29 HR’s and 2 years ago hit .293. He is only 24 and has a hellova arm. Welcome aboard and congrats on the first of hopefully many MUA.

Next up is Angel Pagan. Angel went 2-4, accounting for 2 runs and had 2 stolen bases. Angel exhibited a facet of our game that needs to be revisited more than ever…the stolen base. I has been roughly a week since the Mets stole a base. As many would argue that the Mets just simply have not had the opportunity, they need to start doing this much more often in the future. Getting back to Angel, I guess Jerry must have read the stats on Mr. Pagan as a lead off man. Pagan is hitting .400 in 35 ab’s with a .475 OBP. Pagan is a welcomed shot in the arm.

Last up is Omir Santos. Omir had a nice night going 3-4 and also getting a run in for the night.  The Mets are leading the majors in the most production out of the catcher position. Omir is a big part of that .268 with 4HR’s and 24RBI’s. It is uncharted territory for Omir as to what to expect for the second half, we can only hope that he continues more of the same.

Honorable Mentions:

Pedro Feliciano for throwing a scoreless 8th (also alex cora and daniel murphy for turning a nice double play)

Krod for throwing a drama free 9th inning without it being a  save situation.

Luis Castillo for getting that run in the 2nd inning

  1. I heartily agree with all your MUAs today.

I think the Jeff Francouer addition, if it’s going to turn out to be positive in the long run, will be so largely because of intangibles.

I had read and heard from various sources, some of which I trust and believe in more than others, that Church was unhappy here, a loner, and a whiner.

Jeff Francoeur is happy to be here, and is neither a loner or a whiner as far as I know/can tell. That is hardly enough to propel this team to a division title, but it can only help to have a more upbeat person on the roster and in the locker room. Whether it turns into increased OBP, RBI or wins remains to be seen.

Is Jerry going with this same lineup? I would suppose not since it was successful, but that’s the most confidence I’ve felt on offense since Beltran went down.

    Dirty-

I find it intriguing that you mention Heilman as someone who needed a change of scenery. He still stinks in Chicago, so were you making a Freudian slip about Francoeur?

    • dirtysanchez says:

well it was more the feeling that heilman needed a change of scenery just as francoeur did. Whether or not that leads to success is a different story and was not really my point

  4. sabermetrician says:

AccuScore gives the Metsies a 50-50 chance today. I’m excited for this game, I’m feeling positive about this one.

  5. Mr North Jersey says:

So much has been said about the cavalry arriving in the 2nd half and now the 2nd half is just 4 days away I can hear the trumpets already I am so excited!

  6. charlie_s says:

Anyone else read this in today’s Daily News? Paints an extremely ugly picture of the team. The entire organization needs an enema.

man that is one ugly article. I really am sick of our inept FO.

    • dirtysanchez says:

jez charlie…what an ugly accounting of the organization….

    • gategem says:

      Not pretty.

There has been a tendency among the Mets faithful to address any negative article about the Mets as a “the world hates us” issue. Unfortunately for them Adam Rubin does not fit into this category.

The only constant with the FO problems from GM to GM has been Fred Wilpon. But there is always hope e.g another Ponzi scam could solve the ownership problem. But using the blind squirrel theory Fred could actually hire a good man to run the organization. It was the hiring of Pat Gillick that changed the Phillies fortune and a similar action (I don’t know who that would be but if the Mets want to pay me I’ll start a search and employ some of the good people of this blog) by the Wilpons, purely accidental in their case, could do the same for the Mets. There’s always hope.

It was ugly but besides the injury issues I don’t see anything that you could not say about every organization and every gm and owner. What GM has not made bad signings?
I have said all along, I think Omar’s biggest problem was he tried to win too quickly instead of build slowly. Honestly I think the Beltran AND Pedro signing hurt him. Beltran was a good signing, someone to build the team around slowly, with Reyes and Wright a good foundation. Not enough to win a WS or maybe even make the playoffs but be better than the year before and continue to build. Once Pedro was signed it forced us more into a win now mode that we were not ready for. Then with being competitive we started to want to bring win more win now players like Alou, Elduque, Castillo, etc. Those are the contracts that we have the most issue with and the ones that have came back to hurt us in terms of injuries, cost, draft picks and even spots on a roster. So in short, instead of so many praising it, I think the worst move Omar made was signing Pedro to start with. Next year I think we have a chance to rebuild long term.

I heard about the Church trade and did not understand it to start with, however, now to me it makes perfect sense. Younger with potential. Exactly what I want the Mets to BE next year. Younger with potential. Everyone things the Phillies just got good quick, it did not happen that way. Their stars for the most part are MUCH older than our core. Our window has not closed and has plenty of room to open.
