BREAKING NEWS: Tim Redding to get ax for Julio Lugo

Posted by dirtysanchez on 9:03am, Saturday July 18th 2009

Per Adam Rubin and New York Daily News

“After the Braves routed the Mets, 11-0, Friday night, a source told the Daily News that the organization was prepared to release Tim Redding as soon as today and eat his $2.25 million guaranteed contract.”

“Meanwhile, an AL source revealed that Julio Lugo has been working out at the Mets’ complex in the Dominican Republic. The official predicted that once Lugo clears waivers - he was designated for assignment by the Red Sox Friday - the Mets could sign him.”

Really hate to be one of those guys
BUT, Man!, was I right on about THIS
one! Bad, bad MLB Pitcher AND a waste
    of both time AND money.
So long Redding! Thanks for nothing!

  2. metfreak says:

Why?? Really I rather bring up a kid from one of the lower levels then Logo lets stop picking up other teams trash

  3. Joe R says:

We will need Lugo as right on schedule Reyes points to his hamstring and refuses to run at Pt. Saint Lucie yesterday…Not a setback according to the Mets….um yeah right….see u next year Jose

  4. dirtysanchez says:

Adam also saying this is one of many moves the mets are going to make..

  5. rustyjr says:

last one in closes the coffin door guys - i hate to say that but after last nights lack luster performance it is evident that this team has no fire or desire - and I have a feeling Jerry quits before the seasons end or right after the season - gut feeling

  6. rustyjr says:

hey el duque is available also shall we sign him?

  7. njstuckintx says:

    My feelings on this… eh.
Lugo is sadly better than most options we have.

As for Redding, thanks for the big goat-T. And the poor ERA. Large WHIP. Oh, and the loses. Don’t forget the loses.

  8. fongy2 says:

I know some of you get bent over
my praising of the phils BUT I really
wish all Met fans had been subjected
to having to watch their game last
night.Rain delay and all. An old time
baseball fan(like myself) can see why
that is a championship type team.
You should have seen the interviews
of Ibanez and Stairs. It would made
    y’all understand what I’m talkin”bout. Baseball,especially on
this level is a whole lot more than
    Sabermetric stats. Its a million
small things which my Mets almost
    completely lack.

  9. fongy2 says:

Guess this is Omars way of admitting
we won’t to Jose Reyes until next
spring? You Go! Ray Ramirez and the
rest of our esteemed training staff!
Good thing there was NO CHANCE that
the WBC would have ANY negative effect
    on our 2009 season!

  10. darknova306 says:

Well, one way to make a morning better is to find out that the career scrub pitcher that I wanted nowhere near my team in the winter is getting cut. Finally. Obviously picking up Lugo isn’t a big deal, but he’s better offensively than Cora (especially with Alex fighting that torn thumb ligament) and allows us to use Cora as the backup MI like we signed him for. In the end it’s just another ‘meh’ move for a team that’s gone belly up.

So what are we doing for 2010?

  11. fongy2 says:

I could feel it more than a month
ago. This season had much more the
feeling of an early 90s team than
one of our last 80s team. Trying to
plug holes with players that don’t fit
and still trying to convince ourselves
we were still within the same era of
    our recently (fairly) successful teams
BUT pull a couple threads and it all
    falls apart!

    • rustyjr says:

at least the early ’90’s team had a swagger to it - albeit they were doing perwalks out of police precints lol

      • fongy2 says:

Agreed! And for all us who kill Jerrys managing(and rightfully
        so) xtra inns lastnight
        Phils/Fish…Utley on 2B,phils now up one,two
out,Paul Bako up against Marlins Righty..Gonzalez walks
        Bako to pitch to Jason
Werth b/c its Right/Righty.Werth promply gets a hit to
        drive in the 2nd run..
        putting the Phils up 2.
Lidge struggles throughout the bottom of the inning, giving up
a run but gets out of
        it,Phils win by One.
        Hey! Gonzalez, its
        Paul friggin’ Bako!
        whos that Lefty you’re
        walking NOT Babe Ruth!
You don’t walk Paul Bako to face Jason Werth when yo need to
        get an out! Hello!
        Talk about over/poor
        Managing!

  12. Joe R says:

Does anyone want to talk about how bad Pelf is?? Considering his college coach last week said he has gotten worse since colleg….he is up and down and im starting to believe he maybe as mentally screwed up and wacked out as Ollie only Pelf can hide it better….well at least until his yips come out. Yes yips…we must not forgot about YIPS when talking about 2009!!!!

Heis our number 2 and he stinks. We have alot of issues for next year.

Does anyone really think next year we will have a new legitimate power bat and some real new starting pitchers?

  13. dentulous says:

“A source Friday relayed to the Daily News a recent conversation between two players. One player noticed swelling in the other’s knee and asked why he wasn’t getting it treated. “They don’t want to hear about it,” the injured player replied, according to a source.”

This is from Rubins article. If this is true, wtf kind of organization is this? WTH is wrong with these people?

    • darknova306 says:

Wow. If that’s true I think the players association should start getting involved in this. This injury thing is ridiculous. If you’re willing ignoring player healthy issues, you need to be removed from the game. This is a serious travesty.

    • Kingman 26 says:

He had another piece recently which said the PA is going to look into the handling of Beltran’s injury.

The last two years, our medical and training staff have been the joke of MLB…since spring 2008,

  14. fongy2 says:

Just looked at the Daily News…
    I think Lupicas headline..
“Watson channeling the spirit of ‘77″
Could also apply to the Mets!

  15. charlie_s says:

I’m getting very close to calling for a full scale boycott. How great would it be to see a completely empty Citi Field with 8 guys there each holding a letter “F-I-R-E O-M-A-R”.

It’s not the injuries but all the crap decisions that came before them and probably after them.

This organization is in a death spiral and needs a swift and harsh change on all levels.

    • dentulous says:

The training staff had better be gone come next season. They cannot be brought back, they stink. But we all know they will be back. They wont do what is necessary to get this team on the right track because everyone is a friend of Omar or the Wilpons. Its the fans and players that get shafted.

Better be a major shakeup come next season.

  16. steveo says:

This org is a joke and
its being run by a joker.Omar is done.F Julio Lugo he sucks omar will extend this guy a 3 year contract and we will be where we started next year all over again this team is becoming hard to like because of omar

  17. Mr North Jersey says:

So if the rumors are true Redding being released goes down as one of a number of moves Minaya dropped the ball on.

It is sad how accurate many fans predictions about this team is turning out to be.

    1. Not getting a RF because who knew what to expect from Church in 2009.

    2. Eating Castillo contract and getting ODog instead because of his leadership and great team play.

    3. Not signing Ollie and signing Lowe instead because Ollie is too inconsistent.

    4. Not signing Manny and leaving Murphy in LF instead. (This was my favorite I remember VCarver telling me how much better Murphy was defensively than Manny and that Manny’s defense would hurt more than help us I am sure he is somewhere looking for stats to explain away what happened rather than just open his eyes.)

    5. Signing Redding because he pitched well vs the Phillies rather than the lefty Wolf (Personally I could care less for either of them I was hoping for a trade instead).

    6. Worrying about which Delgado we were going to get the 1st half one or 2nd half one (turns out neither).

    7. SCHNEIDER…SCHNEIDER…SCHNEIDER… (I never thought SCHNEIDER would outlast Castro in the organization I guess I was wrong).

SO SO SAD, SO SO SAD INDEED, but hey we have a still I hear Lugo is the 1st of many moves to come
Cross your fingers maybe Dunn Pierre Halladay are just a trade away (I know yeah right).

  18. Kingman 26 says:

Getting rid of Redding should cheer us up…it shows they are ready to eat money to make changes.

Lugo is not Jeter, but come on folks-Cora is not an everyday guy and Argenis is not a MLB player…obviously Jose is gone and we need someone…Lugo improves the lineup a little and the bench a lot by sending Cora back there.

And my guess is that this is the beginning of a busy next two weeks.

    • fongy2 says:

      yeah a million dollars NOT
the 15 or so still owed
Slappy or the 30 or so still
      owed Ollie! Too Bad though.
AND I sure hore you’re right
      about the next 2 weeks!
I also hope that if by some chance Omars feeling a little
heat we dont see any Victor
      Zambrano type moves!

  19. fongy2 says:

    This has really become unwatchable
and I’m the type of baseball fan who
would stop and watch a beer league
game if passing a park while working
    in the field anywhere.

    • Kingman 26 says:

The last two nights have been as anemic and unwatchable as it gets….did you see the pregame where Maddux said “Let’s beat the Mets–like old times!”

      (Insert vomiting noise here)

      • fongy2 says:

        Yeah! BUT atleast he’s
        honest.Plus,I’ve always
been slow to anger toward Maddux ’cause
how he blew off the Yanks who had offered
        more $ than the Bravos.
        Plus,part 2, we did
        have his brother :)

  20. fongy2 says:

Looks to me like some on the DailyNews
    blog are stealing my material!

  21. steveo says:

Barroa is a better ss than lugo . Lugo can hit better but at this point its a wasted move that would have ramifications into next year and beyond no lugo

  22. fongy2 says:

    This isn’t even entertaining!
    Can someone atleast shoot some
bleach at a fan? OR get caught
    smoking weed outside the park?
Jeez!, talk about BAD & BORING!
