Mets in the Papers

Get your morning dose of Mets in the Papers.
Ken Davidoff, “Issues of the Day: The Phillies, the Mets, the Yankees, Joba Chamberlain and Don Zimmer”
You’d have to be delusional at this point to think they’re getting back in this race. So why not sell off the few interesting pieces you have, meaning Brian Schneider and…um…I guess Gary Sheffield if he gets healthy, although he’ll raise a stink. If Carlos Delgado could actually get back on the field by mid-August and put together a few good games, you could certainly get something back for him during the waivers period.
Doug Miller, “Recalling momentous day on, above Earth”
The day man first walked on the moon started like any other game day for Gaylord Perry, a 30-year-old right-hander in the middle of a season for the San Francisco Giants in which he’d go 19-14 with a 2.49 ERA.
Ben Shpigel, “Ailing Mets’ Chances Carted Away”
Try as they might, the Mets cannot forget the injuries. They are reminded every game, when, as Wright said, βthe majority of the time you look across the field, the other team has more talent.β It is also hard to forget when players continue getting hurt at a staggering rate. The same cart that was rebuffed by an ailing Gary Sheffield on Friday night was welcomed β and necessary β 48 hours later.
Marty Noble, “Mets drop four-game series in Atlanta”
The Mets beat the Braves on Saturday afternoon. If their performance was marked on a curve, they crushed the home team. They executed, they amassed nine hits, they produced multirun rallies. And their starting pitcher provided seven scoreless innings. Then, just when you thought it couldn’t get better, it didn’t. Sunday night brought another game in the South and a chance for consecutive victories. And the Mets fell awkwardly to the occasion.
Marty Noble, “Castillo enjoying bounceback season”
For reasons that excluded Cora and Castillo, the Mets’ 2009 has stalled, but only after weeks of regression. This set of shortstop/second baseman is not to be compared with Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker, Bucky Dent and Willie Randolph or Rey Ordonez and Edgardo Alfonzo. But it has provided the Mets stabilized play in the middle of the infield. Cora and Castillo have been integral parts of a solution that hasn’t worked as well as the Mets had hoped. Neither is part of the problem, though.
Bart Hubbuch, “Mets Again Suffer Insult, Injury”
Just when they thought it couldn’t get any worse on the injury front, the Mets added starter Fernando Nieve’s strained right quadriceps to the insult of a 7-1 loss to the Braves here last night.
Bart Hubbuch, “Manuel Labors to Explain Doc Crack”
“Well, I hope they would know me by now, that I don’t mean any malice or anything,” Manuel said. “It was just the appropriate thing for me to say. I need to say some things every now and then to get my mind right, too, you know?”
Adam Rubin, “Mets’ injury woes continue as Nieve injured 7-1 in loss to Braves in Atlanta”
Nieve, who next had been scheduled to face his former team, Houston, on Saturday, planned to fly with the Mets to Washington Sunday night, then continue onto New York for an MRI exam today. Jerry Manuelsaid it was an obvious DL situation for Nieve. “I feel pretty bad pain,” said Nieve, who limped around the clubhouse. “It’s still sore there now.”
David Lennon, “Nieve injured as Mets fall to Braves, 7-1″
Sphere: Related ContentAfter seeing Fernando Nieve crash into the dirt beyond first base last night, then roll on the ground clutching his right leg, Jerry Manueland the club’s two trainers performed the all-too-familiar ritual of packaging another Mets player for a trip to the disabled list.

Just wondering what most of our thoughts or predictions on what happened if during Spring Training someone told us our season would be over by July 15th??
This stinks and is a shame. Really no one to blame imo.
My reaction would have been…Jeez I dont even know..Maybe Johan went down and our starting pitching was horrible…I guess maybe I would say Wright went down too…Never all of what we have seen though lol
In the Spring all I kept saying was we cannot collapse in September again but I didn’t mean for us to collapse in July instead.
Be careful what you wish for.
Right now I’d rather have the September collapse at least it means we are competitive but this now is depressing.
that is what playing meaningful games in september, well, means!
be good enough to be in it is about all you can really ask for every year. ANything more takes a measure of luck, good health, etc.
every season has it’s own twists and turns. That’s why you have to watch. And no matter what the pre season prognosticators say, it never quite works out like you planned.
Don’t forget, while every year some team(s) picked for greatness flame out, most years others that are expected to do nothing have big seasons (’69 Mets, ‘08 Rays, etc.)
So can that mean that the Yankees and Phillies will not win the World Series?
Please let it mean that
I would just vomit and die if I had to watch the 2009 World Series be fought by the Yankees vs the Phillies.
Agreed!! But sadly I would root for the Yanks
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
No?? You would want the Phils to win??
LoL DONT root 4 either no no no no no! LoL
OK Gun to my head yes Yankees but only if its a gun to my head. A knife I have to think about it.
Haha
I would want the Phils to win in 4 games, hopefully all routs, with Mariano blowing a couple of saves and Bloe Joba getting shelled as well.
I’m with jerz on this one. Gun to my head, Yankees.
What would your Dad say?!?!
LOL! Mine would disown me immediately!
We play the Yanks 6 times a year, I’m sorry maybe its because I’m younger but I dont harbor the hate for the Yanks I do for the Philths. We play them 18 or however many times a year, we have to watch Pricktorino, Rollins, and all the other players on that team I dislike and to witness them winning back to back WS. I might just puke thinking about it. Imagine what we would have to hear from Philths phans. The Yanks shove their tradition of winning down your throat but at least they have one. The Phils winning…..blech.
So true, Kingman. He and I would be on opposite sides of the fence with this one - just barely!
TK, probably b/c of your age but having to live through years and years of being the second class team in NY - always - leaves a bitter taste in our mouth for all things Yankees
Joe, once they announced the same team from 2008 (besides K-Rod) I pretty much knew it was over right from the beginning.
But mrbill, you must admit that it is injuries that killed us this year….
The injuries killed us sooner than expected. Without the injuries it would have been a slow death … lol
Mets in the Papers.
These weren’t exactly the headlines I was looking forward to halfway through the season for our NY Mets…
Regardless, I’ll be watching until the bitter end. I can’t imagine summer without baseball and baseball to me means the NY Mets.
Agreed…can’t jump ship on them…now is when they need their fans the most. And “the bitter end” is probably what it will be.
What?? Lol Listen…Im usually the last to boo a player. I strongly always and still do wonder, how great our city and team would be if we cheered them when they were in their worst slumps. We would seperate ourselves from pretty much all fans in all cities. But to believe that these players, this day and age, are saying to themselves we need our fans now more than ever is nuts. I believe sometimes as fans we want to think the players care and notice us more than they really do. We really dont matter much in thier eyes as much as we want to think. Its sort of like the crazed fans at a basketball game behind the basket waiving their noise makers at the free throw shooter!! Ask any player…They dont even notice it. Like I said, I am a huge Met fan but I dont care nor judge anyone who refuses to watch the rest of this year or go to a game..Its their choice and their money. Im sure they are still big fans.
Well you do your thing and I’ll do mine and the same is true for all fans. I’m not deluding myself into thinking that my support will mean anything it’s just a personal choice. And I happen to think that positive energy is better than no energy or negative energy.
I agree and I’m a fan of positive energy and hope they bring the farm up and play but I was just responding to…now they need us the most. To me its not like a close friend or a family member that is having troubles and needs support.
The team needs an intervention!!!! lol
LOL.
I will TIVO all the games going forward and only watch the wins!! This will be a successful season at least in my mind! Undefeated baby!
LMAO!!!
I’m listening to WFAN and it is obvious they are out for blood. They are in full “time for a change” mode.
Callers saying Minaya deserves no credit for anything.
I am a staunch critic of Minaya but lets be fair he has done good also.
Good things he did
1. Beltran signing - yes he threw more money to do it but he threw more money. (I wish he would of thrown money at signing Manny)
2. Wagner signing - until he got hurt Wagner was a capable closer
3. Delgado trade - do I need to go into details?
4. Endy Chavez - solid pickup (The Catch cmon)
5. Duaner Sanchez - Never the same once he got in that cab (probably reason why we lost in 2006)
6. Xavier Nady - Solid pickup
7. John Maine - do I need to go into details?
8. Oliver Perez - trading for him was good (signing him as free agent was bad)
9. Johan Santana - do I need to go into details?
10. Francisco Rodriguez - do I need to go into details?
Bad things he did
1. trading away Heath Bell
2. Signing Oliver Perez
3. Signing Luis Castillo
4. Willie Randolph firing
5. Not getting bullpen help in 2008
I am sure everyone has their own lists but to me Minaya has done good and has done bad does he deserve to be fired? I am not ready to start over just yet unless you have a superstar GM coming in i’d rather stay with Minaya.
That’s my 1 cents worth.
i’ll give you 2 cents on that one
Minus 2 epic collapses by the bullpen we would have been in the playoffs three years in a row. Its really that cut and dry to me. I dont think Omar or even God, ok maybe god lol, could have predicted that much of a collpase by the bullpen.
I agree Mr North….Omar has done FAR more good than bad.
I will become a huge Omar fan if we have a new manager, trainer, and team doctor next year.
Regardless, I think Omar gets one more year to have us at least deep into the NLCS again.
I will become a huge Omar fan if we have a legitimate number 2 starter that forces the rest to move back a spot in the rotation. If we have a big bat in the left not HUFF!!!!…If he makes a couple of other nice deals as well.
Yes, forgot about our unquestionable top need, a number two starter—thanks Joe, you are absolutely right.
No I knew what you meant King..you were stating the obvious disasters lol. I just wanted to jump into the roster a bit lol
I also agree 100% with your thought above:
“This stinks and is a shame. Really no one to blame imo.”
In a way, this kind of makes it even worse…
Haha true…It is always sweeter to be able to point the finger at someone, not only for personal enjoyment but at least you know what needs to be fixed.
ehh, i wouldnt say “FAR.” hes had some nice pick ups but he just happeded to catch lightning in a bottle (maine, perez, nieve…) but for some reason he seems to think that this is going to happen all the time which has aided in the formation of the not-so-talented team we have on the field and that stands true even in the minor leagues.
Well, remember 2001–2004?
And to me, it is utterly unfair to say he caught lightning in a bottle by being smart enough to want Maine and Ollie. That’s called good scouting.
And the reason we have a not-so-talented team right now is that Reyes, Beltran, Delgado, Maine, and JJ are on the DL.
As for the minor leagues, you might be right about that.
Omar has done good and bad IMO, but it is not his performance as much as it is the franchise that is spinning out of control. Omar and Jerry need to be casualities because of the way this season has culminated. The injuries are the number 1 problem, that is a no brainer. However, I have lost all trust and confidence in this FO to successfully run a team, any longer. We need fresh faces, new blood, and a new start. I don’t think this current FO has what it takes to do that. No retreads, no Bernazard, no Acta. Start over building around the core. The time has run out on this team, 2005-2009 and a playoff appearance to show for it. I can’t in good conscience continue to have belief in the FO to do the right things to help this team win, even excluding this season. This is a decision that should have been made following last season. I’ll root for the Mets, but not for the people who run them.
Francesa saying Beltran is furious and may never trust the Mets because they said he could play hurt?? Is this his speculation?? because I didnt hear anything about him being pissed?
He got his 2nd opinion from his own doc and he said basically the same thing as the Mets did right?
I posted a link to a story last week which said this, and even said that the Players Association might investigate the Mets’ handling of injuries based on this…I think it was from the Ledger.
Of course, I am sure Francesspool will exaggerate and lie to make the story even worse, but there seems to be some reality there.
No matter what anyone says, the handling of injuries this year has been an outright farce, and we will have to wait until the offseason to read what the truth really is…but it will surely come out.
Oh man…SO now our star center fielder isnt on board going forward maybe…Ugh..Its so tough because I like Beltran, I like Delgado, I like Wright, I like Reyes….and their window is closing if not totally closed for all of them to win a WS together. What a shame.
Not if we clean house in the FO, and show Beltran that his concerns are noted. This FO is a complete and utter joke.
True…but the chances of Delgado coming back next year are zero I would assume. He will sign elsewhere and hit 30 HR’s drive in 120 and we will have Murphy standing at first lol
Well Delgado is done as a Met hopefully. We need to go in a new direction. I will not be worried until I hear from Beltran himself.
delgago should be signed for another year if murphy is going to be the man if he leaves. delgado now is twice as good as murph will ever be.
Thats not the point. Yes, Delgado is a good player. However, we cannot trust Delgado to be healthy for an entire year. He is 38 years old, and has been through the entire saga the past 3 years. We need to get rid of the parts of the team that have been throughout both collapses, Fresh blood. We can’t trust Delgado for an entire season, thats not to say that Murphy should be the starting 1st baseman. We need an FA or trade.
If Murphy is our starting 1B I sign Delgado lol
oh, noooooooooooo
No way Delgado is back…no chance…and Murph is not the answer either…we need a new first baseman.
Assuming that the OF next year starting off is FMart, Beltran, and Frenchy, first base is where our new power bat will reside.
Maybe Murph is traded or a supersub off the bench, but we simply cannot have a guy with little power who is not getting on base OR hitting much playing first.
I wouldn’t assume that F-Mart is playing LF next year and I really hope he is not.
In addition to proving that he is not ready yet, he’s also proven that he still can’t stay healthy. And I don’t want a 20 year old to be an important question mark.
You put a guy like that into a lineup that’s not going to rely upon him.
there have been rumblings about unnamed players and the FO views about how injuries are handled.
Funny Francesa saying Mets need to sign Halladay and have best 1,2 punch in mlb.
Heard that…I mean it would be nice to get him…but does he not realize we would have to give up our whole farm system and prob a couple of major leaguers??
There is an article somewhere out there (can’t remember where I read it) that Beltran is furious b/c - if you remember correctly - they originally diagnosed it as treatable with a cortisone shot - which he got. Waited the 24 hours, was back in the lineup.
All along it was apparently a deep bone bruise that does not heal unless you are not playing. After all was said and done, I believe the second opinion was to make sure they were finally right with the ‘latest’ diagnosis of DL for a deep bone bruise. Second opinion concurred.
Got cha. Makes sense
What a shame…Beltran was on pace to have a great all-around year…maybe one of his best. Another reason why i hate this year!!!!!!
Alon (Brooklyn, NY)
Can the Mets trade any of their veterans and get some prospects with value? Also, do you Valentine will be their manager next season?
Buster Olney (1:34 PM)
Alon: Great question — you know they won’t trade Wright or Santana, and some of the older guys like Sheffield or Livan or Castillo have no trade value. The one piece that might bring you back a really nice prospect would be Pedro Feliciano. If I was the Mets, I’d let people know I’m taking offers for him, and maybe they would get offered something good. If not, you just keep him for 2010.
TRS actually brought this idea up in the Dugout last nite. It never occurred to me but I wonder if they actually could get anything of value for him.
I disagree…we need him if we plan to get any of the Phils out next year.
