Post Game: Hammer Time

Posted by GravediggerHebner on 9:53pm, Wednesday July 22nd 2009

Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, uh oh

Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, uh oh

Here comes the Hammer.  There goes the baseball.  Washington Nationals right fielder Josh Willingham, aka The Hammer, had 4 hits in 4 at bats including 2 doubles and the game winning 2-run homer.  The lowly Nats took 2 of 3 from the visiting New York Mets who have a day to sit in the corner (otherwise known as Houston) and think about what they’ve done before playing the resurgent Astros Friday night.

No Delaying the inevitable

No Delaying the inevitable

The Nationals who boast the 29th worst team ERA (5.13) of the 30 teams in baseball (Cleveland is the only other team over 5.00 at 5.27) have in the last 2 games allowed only 1 run to the Mets on 11 hits.

Like Adam Carolla, this Met season will not make a good movie

Like Adam Carolla, this Met season will not make a good movie

The Nats took a 1-0 lead off Mike Pelfrey (7-6) in the 4th on a Ronnie Belliard sacrifice fly.  The Mets tied the game in the top of the 6th when Angel Pagan tripled then scored on a throwing error by Nats shortstop Christian Guzman.

Nailing the metaphor

Nailing the metaphor

But in the bottom of the 6th, Adam Dunn led off with a line drive to right that defensive whiz Jeff Francoeur lost in the lights for a gift double.  One out later Willingham swung his hammer and blasted a home run over the left field wall giving the Nats the lead for good.

One for the MENSA folks

One for the MENSA folks

Hammer laid waste to a quality start by Pelfrey who allowed the 3 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks over 7 innings.  Unfortunately for him, me and you, the Met offense could not solve the mystery that is the Nats pitching staff, and the Nats won 3-1.

  2. metsfan4decades says:

‘We have enough to compete’. Can we start then please?

when jerry says all we need is hot pitching i guess he means shutouts everyday. i really wish david wright our star third basemen would hit a hr or maybe in a crazy crazy world carry us. ya know like win a few games for us with his bat….

  4. Kingman 26 says:

Yes, PLEASE keep this humor train a-rollin…

Damn Grave, you are so good I can even forgive you for choosing Tom Delay over John Milner for the Hammer theme!!

    :-)

  5. oleosmirf says:

hopefully the Mets suck enough to the point where we actually get a good draft pick. Maybe the Mets will draft someone decent for once…

btw Omar and Bernazard need to go by at least the end of the season. Blame the injuries and what not but our farm system is a complete disaster. Probably the worst in baseball…

    • fongy2 says:

      Yeah, just what we need…
      more ping-pong balls!
Is their a big man coming
      out early this year?
      Oh, wait…got confused
      with the Knicks.

    • gategem says:

If the Mets finish low enough they not only get a top draft pick but they don’t lose it if they sign a type A FA. Of course the Wilpons will retrench financially and sign no one of substance and draft someone that they could have picked in round 29 or something like that. :)

  6. JoeR says:

we were only 6 1/2 out of wild card….a few days ago…and we play pretty much all the teams ahead of us….we cant beat the nats…these guys are really bad…u would think they would stumble on a few runs once in a while…

  8. steveo says:

Loose every game release everyone who’s a f/a next year an some that are not. Get into last place get a 1st rnd mercy pick do. Something right. This team won’t even do that right. They will battle for 4th like the bumbling fools that they are.

  9. metsfan4decades says:

Sports Night reporting there was a verbal altercation with Bernazard and Johan Santana as well.

Losing a series to the Nats was a fitting end to what’s been a circus these past few days. I’m just paranoid enough to wonder if, since it’s been a good 17 days, someone decided to leak this story today to change the focus away from the ‘why didn’t you make that Halladay trade’?

There is a little over 2 months left to this season. Is this as bad as it can possibly get?

  10. asod75 says:

Our baseball team is in shambles. I fear it will only get worse until Omar and his lackey Bernazard say bye-bye. But even then, the WIlpons still run this circus and I have zero faith in their ability to bring in someone good. We can blame the injuries all we want, but this organization is an utter mess right now.

  11. Mr North Jersey says:

I posted this earlier but feel like it fits da theme still

    OK…OK…OK…

Ladies and Gentlemen, Moms and Dads and Boys and Girls,

On this corner he went through an 0 for 44 stretch at the plate in 1984, tying a major league hitless streak for non-pitchers in the last 50 years.
Hailing from Caguas, Puerto Rico measuring 5′9″ and weighing 190 pounds, Antonio “The Hazard” Bernazard Garcia!

And in the other corner representing the Dominican Republic he was the 1st Latino to hold the title of GM in MLB history, measuring a few inches taller than “The Hazard” and outweighing him by an ungodly amount. The undisputed GM of the New York Mets Omar “El Tigre” Teodoro Antonio Minaya y Sanchez!

    LLLLLLETS!!!!!GET!!!!!READY!!!!!TO!!!!!RUMMMMMBLLLLLLLLLLLE!!!!!

  12. Kingman 26 says:

Where the hell are the Wilpons?

Seriously, their silence is about the most deafening thing I have ever heard.

Maybe the folks who said they are absolute clowns who just own the team for fun and profit are right.

But seriously, do they have ANYTHING to say about their team coming apart–on the field, in the minors, with injuries, in the front office—what the hell could possibly be next??

And Fong, I have to admit, Omar looks like an impotent fool right about now. His appearance last night was a joke, and Bernazard still being with the team–if even ONE of the stories regarding KRod, Johan, and the seat at Citi tirade are true–is really, really weak.

Cannot believe what has happened to this team in the last 6 weeks.

    • dentulous says:

“what the hell could possibly be next??”

I dont think any of us want to know. …..

      • Kingman 26 says:

        LOL–I agree!!

However, after TWO runs in the last TWENTY FIVE innings against the worst team in the game, my crystal ball can pretty clearly see a nasty seven games coming up against Houston and Colorado…

Two wins in the next seven games by Johan are clearly all that stand between us and serious oblivion.

      • JoeR says:

beltran speaking out on the mets letting him play when he was seriously hurt….

    • asod75 says:

As much as I hate the Steinbrenners, I’d MUCH rather have them running my team than the Wimpons. At least they give a crap about winning. And here’s a fun fact for you all. Since June 1, the Mets are 16-29. The Nats over that span? 15-30, one game worse. I doubt this team sniffs .500 again this season. Hope I’m wrong but I don’t think I am.

    • JoeR says:

they are def true…manuel admitted it and so did coleman regarding krod and johan

    • fongy2 says:

I can! And like I said before,
I’m sad and sorry to be right
about this guy and the way
      he runs things.
      This team NEEDED CHANGE!
      NOT an overhaul BUT some
change! AND given what happened here the last two
yrs, you cannot allow two-thirds of your team to not
be in camp for half the spring.Leftfield and Rightfield?? Murphy and Church
      C’mon! Luis returning AND
Ollie to round out the top
      of our rotation? C’mon x2!
      THAT was a Championship plan?
With the Phillies already better than us? C’mon!,part3.
I could go on and on BUT,YOU
know Brock. Hey man,its like anything else,go through it
enough and you can see what
      could easily happen.Thats
where I was at in Spring
AND it did. Very sad though
      b/c I don’t know if its enough
for ‘Ole Freddy to clean house.AND IF he does, will he
      finally go outside the team
for our next GM? Its been
      30 years since thats happened.

      • Kingman 26 says:

Yeah, you have been right, and I am sure you are not enjoying this any more than I am.

It is so pathetic and disappointing, how everything–everything–is disintegrating.

Omar has no idea what to do, and the Wilpons are completely invisible.

One thing can be certain–barring a miraculous and virutally impossible recovery, we will surely see major changes, and possibly very soon.

If the Wilpons’ finances are really as bad due to Madoff and the economy as is being speculated, the Mets’ worth and performance become even more essential to them.

      • Mr North Jersey says:

        What are you right about?
To state the obvious takes no skill
What you have here is a club that has had their season stolen by injuries.
        Simple

Now is when true character is measured I see David Wright forcing himself to play every night when it is so obvious he needs to rest.

I see a team of 25 that is not pointing the finger at each other.

I see a GM that even though everyone around him is losing their heads screaming to make a move any move is not swayed and will stand his ground.

It is easy to say its his fault but no one says who will come in that will do a better job?

There is many forces at work trying to sway opinion in one direction or another but if you believe this is all just one man’s fault then it is obvious you are looking at things with binders on.

You say fire Minaya as this is a cure without asking yourself what is the reason we are where we are this 2009 season?

        I-N-J-U-R-I-E-S

        • fightins says:

Dude your pitching stinks ours aint much better but we give up a slow 5 runs you guys do it in like
2 innings the injuries would have won games but you have no # 2 or 3 pitchers oh yeah perez or hurtin maine or balkin pelfrey wow that’s bad

          • Mr North Jersey says:

you are so right and yet still you do not see that this team has endured possibly the worst stretch of injuries and offensive drought that I have ever seen in my 24 years of following this team and after all that we are still only 7.5 games out of a wild card and 10 games out in the division after watching your Phils reel off 10 wins in a row.

Imagine if we had all our guys healthy where we would be?

No wait don’t you may not like it.

        • fongy2 says:

          Nah,you’re right! Omar is
          a friggin’
          genius!

  13. dentulous says:

I really am scared to wake up tomorrow morning and read what else is wrong with the Mets. You just know it is going to get even uglier before it gets better…

    • I agree. I have read multiple professional and amateur opinions over the last 4-6 weeks that have said versions of “this is the bottom” and “we can only go up from here.”

I don’t know what those people are seeing that I’m not, but I don’t think the bottom has been reached yet. I obviously can’t substantiate that, but it’s what I believe.

  14. fightins says:

Let me tell you this guys I’m no met fan but your gm and his assistants have made a new low to this team.He is the laughing stock of baseball right now this is a disgrace whatyour team is putting you through.I can’t believe I am actually saying this but I a phillies fan actually feel bad for you guys !I can’t believe I just that.Anyway he and that jerk bernazard have to be sent packing this team was a mess before this but now its really bad.

    • Mr North Jersey says:

it is sad that it appears to be a power struggle within the organization.

One possible Conspiracy theory is that Tony B in an attempt to undermine Minaya in hopes of putting himself in a position to take over leaked information about Mets turning down trade offer for Halliday. This in turn made Minaya so mad that he had the story leaked about Tony B with the the seat incident and KROD incident to go along with it. Setting off a chain of events that will force Wilpon SR and Wilpon jr to decide once and for all who stays Minaya or Tony B.

Minaya has heard rumors for a while now about how Tony B was Wilpon jr’s pet and I would say that he is at his wit’s end with all these Tony B stories and leaks and now is the time to lay the hammer down or he may not survive the season.

Minaya has been in this game a long time and I would never underestimate his resolve. Does Tony B survive this? I’ll just say this when asked by media if it is found to be true is it grounds for dismissal and Minaya said “I think we are just going to investigate it” you can take that as a yes once we dot the i’s and cross the t’s he is gone.

      That is just 1 theory

  16. tkfj says:

Clean house. I can’t make it any simpler. It is not so much as what has culminated on the field this season, no as much as I dislike Omar i cannot and will not blame him for injuries. However, that being said, his actions over the past couple of days which include a mockery of an interview with SNY, in which he did not know of the standing of this team, and his willingness to defend Tony B, who has now supposedly had 4 run-ins recently, have thrown the punishing blow that will continue to send this team in a downward spiral. The team on the field is embarrasing enough, but now we have controversy within our organization.

As if a collapse in 2007, and a bullpen implosion in 2008 were not enough. The Mets are on a new stage of mockery and ridicule. We cannot continue to proceed and actions must be taken to ensure a clean slate starting 2010. We do not need more controversy going into next season, and I personally can no longer trust this FO to make a smart decision. Omar had his time to build a winner an NLCS appearance isnt half bad, but fresh blood is in order.

  17. fongy2 says:

    Simple solution,Ax-Omar and his
cast of payasos. Then,Turn it over
to two professionals John Hart and
    Buck Showalter.Not that complicated.
