The Mets need a bigger boat

I will not root for any team in the World Series. All I know is, everyday I’m happy because one team I hate loses. Oh yea and another thing, one team is going to be miserable a week from today, and that’s fine with me.
Watching the World Series really makes you take stock of your own team. The reality is, I see a lot of good players on both teams, and a lot of holes in ours. My conclusion, the Mets have some serious work ahead of them. The Phillies are going to be real tough in years to come and I know that if the Yankees lose this year, they might spend another half a billion dollars on more free agents.
Can the Mets compete with these teams next year? At this point, absolutely not.
Now I have been reading a lot about how the Mets are going after Matt Holliday or Jason Bay. But lets be realistic, even if the Mets get one of these guys along with an All Star at first base, second base, and catcher, there is no way they are going to win with Maine, Perez, Pelfrey and Niese for a pitching staff behind Santana.
A little over a month ago, Jeff Wilpon told the Met fans that there will be improvements made over the winter. Hey Jeff, I hope your watching the Fall Classic because if this team needs one thing, it’s a solid number 2 starter. And Jeff, you also told us that Omar will have the money to spend on a free agent. This was Lackey right?
After seeing the pitching from both the Yankees and the Phillies, it better be or someone close to it.
So what’s the last thing I want to hear? Last week, I read that the Mets are not going to be in the Lackey free agent sweepstakes. So Omar, what’s the plan? I know you have one because your job is on the line and the Met season is at stake.
It is really a ploy? Are you really going for Lackey? Or maybe your planning to empty the farm system yet again for the gunslinger Halladay. Or maybe you have been talking to the Astros about Oswalt?
Whatever you choose just remember what you are about to see this week and ask yourself this: If we were playing the Yankees, what would the score be if the match up was Burnett and Maine? Or Pettite and Perez?
I’m sorry, just for a second I was dreaming, let’s just look at the regular season- Lee and Santana, Hamels and Maine, Pedro and Perez. What do you think? Is it enough?
I’m thinking the same thing you are.

well, if I am interpreting correctly, the Mets need Pedro? He was apparently the Phils #2 starter.
and I disagree with your premise. If the Mets add all-stars at the positions they don’t already have them at, then they certainly can win with that rotation.
I tend not to agree man id rather have atleast 1 more power bat to replace delgado cuz we have a capable power bat from frenchy now and try to get a lacky or trade for oswalt
you not agreeing wit me or gonzo? I’m guessing that his concept (that I was commenting on) of th emets adding all starts at every position would probably add plenty of power!
im agreeing with you man - the mets tried that in 92 and that team didnt have any chemistry whatso ever - we need a good # 2 and a true power bat - if you can make some up grades fine but othewr than that catcher - lets be honest there is no piazza out there to be had and a first baseman ( nady perhaps? ) we are pretty strong in the other areas

looking at another site, there was quite the discussion about crawford and A Gon.
I like crawford, and he would be an interesting addition, but I reaaly don’t think I would part with a lot of top tier MiL talent for him (not enough of it, and he is pricey at 1 year/10 mill, then a FA).
But, a gon for 2 years at cheap money? That sounds interesting. Farm system gutting, but interesting.
If Davis/Holt/Parnell (hell, throw in murphy too) could bring him back, yeah, that you do. If the Mets I mean! Wonder what it would really take to get him?
the price tag (payroll) would be of tremendous help, since you could still add lackey or holliday if you so desire.
Man, adding A Gon and Holliday would certainly jazz up the offense!
If they can add A Gon, you’re talking about the newest face of our franchise or at the least our best player for years to come pending we sign him. He is a superstar, and one of the best in the game. If he is attainable, you gotta let the pads have their pick of 3 or 4 of our guys, because this guy is a sure thing, or as close as you can get to one.
Also, I’d go for Crawford over Holliday in a second.
yeah, a gon is the type you unload for.
even better (in the Mets scenerio) i sthat he is cost controlled for 2 years. So, if you can extend, the big money hits in 2012.
and coincidently, the other big money position player contract expires after 2011, so it would be a wash (or close to it!).
I choose to not even think realistically about AGon, because truthfully its just not possible.
I think AGon would be a great pick up but c’on, do you honestly feel that this team can compete with this pitching staff? I know that Omar is looking to add someone, but we need another gun. Look at the other teams. You think Maine can be a #2 starter? You banking on Perez or Pelfry? It has to be Lackey, Oswalt or Halladay. Or at least another pitcher of that caliber. If not, were watching and hating the Phillies again.
I agree.
If we regard the Mets just as is, with no new additions at all, the starting pitching staff offers very little after Johan Santana other than uncertainty.
The offense offers multiple All-Stars who haven’t even reached their prime years yet.
If for the sake of discussion we can only improve one aspect of the team, starting position players OR starting pitchers, to me the starting pitchers cry out for help in that comparison.
Amen! Pitching first and foremost, then fantasize about bats like Agon.
Agree 100%.
Pitching, pitching, pitching.
And I have to disagree with gonzo. Phillies will only be good for years to come if they get pitching. Basically, right now they have Lee and not much else (assuming Pedro does not return).
yeah, I just rambled n the pumpkin thread about the phils rotation. Lee (2010 only, then a FA) vs santana, a wash I guess.
but right now the phils 2-5 is pedro, hamels, blanton and Happ.
I hope they do sign and count on Pedro next year. No way, IMO, he can stay healthy and productive for the grind of a normal season. Looks OK pitching every 12 days though! May end up seeing drabek taking that spot in the rotation.
at least the mets “uncertainty” have all put together very good stretches (1/2 season at least) in the majors. Might not mean they will do it, but at least you know they can do it!
adding another top of the rotation, generally reliable and healthy guy would, of course, be a very nice thing for the mets to do, but they also need at least 1 more bat to count on.
I’m thinking 2010 is lost cause just from a view of what’s out there to add to the team on the FA market I certainly don’t think 2010 is a throw away year but maybe a building block I’m a believer in if you throw allot of money at the FAs that are availabe this year the mets become handcuffed for years to come. And I don’t believe that if the mets don’t make the playoffs that Omar is gone if they improve on the basics like pitching deeper into games and less sloppy play I believe Omar will get yet another pass Fixing all that is wrong won’t occur in one offseason ,it never does.
I have to say I agree that Minaya should be looking at pitching 1st.
I am kind of looking at it from this P.O.V.
A. If Mets are trying to win now
B. If Mets are trying to build to win for the Long Term.
Scenario A
1st on my list is Roy Halladay. Yes he will be 33 years old next season but he is a horse.
If it takes a trade and sign of 4 year 100 million plus an option is fine with me.
He doesn’t have a history of injury that I can tell. He may just be a freak of nature ala Nolan Ryan.
Add him to Santana and I will put that pair of Aces against anyone in Baseball in a Playoff series.
Scenario B
1st on my list is Aroldis Chapman this kid has the arm rarely seen in Baseball Already regarded one of the best arms to come out of Cuba. Even if he has to go thru the growing pains of adjusting to MLB in 3 years we may regret not signing him.
After that you can add whoever you want to whatever scenario but if you ask me who do you look at 1st if Pitching is a priority then those 2 are it.
