The Phillies Are Back-to-Back Champs! …wait, what?

backtoback

Don't count your Phanatics before they hatch

According to this post on The700Level, this ad popped up on the back page of this morning’s Philadelphia Inquirer. The Phillies are down in the the series 3-1, but they’re not out yet! Six teams since 1900 have accomplished the feat of coming back from a 3-1 series deficit. I have to give some credit to Rollins though - he was gracious enough to allow the Yankees to win three games in the series, after his initial 1-game allowance. What a classy guy.

I also have a request, if the Phillies don’t come back (I’m trying not to jinx anything here) that we continue to refer to them as the WFCs. Except, instead of World *Frickin’ Champions it will now stand for the World *Frickin’ Chumps.

*this word should rhyme with clucking. B’gawk!

Yeah, whatever. So number 27 seems a
lock for the yankees. Nice way to open
their new stadium and further their history. This while we try and figure
out how to find bargains out there to
fix all the holes on our team.
This really is the perfect end to the worst season of my life as a Met fan.
The only way I start to feel better about 2010 is if Omar can somehow and
    bring in Crawford,AGonzalez&Lackey.

  2. stickguy says:

Just opened my copy of the paper, and yup, there is the ad. It is for macy’s. SOmeone in the copy department is going to get reamed out good for this one!

Too bad the Giants spit the bit yesterday. Otherwise, it would be a fun day to go out in public, here in philly land.

  3. darknova306 says:

LOL Someone’s getting fired for that one.

  4. fongy2 says:

And maybe I’ve missed it since I’ve
only watched about 90% of this post season BUT…Not one word/mention of ARod’s steroid abuse?
Not one word about the entire issue
and scandal the whole steroid era was
AND how much the yankees benefitted from it? And b/t/w how much worse could the umpping be?
    Still though…No replays!…No red hankys!

    • prismo says:

Good. I don’t want to hear about steroids anymore.

      • fongy2 says:

This ARod is such a low-life that even
after his best moment in baseball,he has to knock a teammate.
Anyone else catch the post game interview where he said that, this
team is so good that even when guys like him
        and Texeira hadn’t done
anything, they were still up in the series?
        Huh,…friggin’ ARoid!

        • wannybackstra says:

I didn’t find the statement offensive but I did have to think twice about it.

He could have just limited his comments to himself. But in the end, it was just honesty.

        • wannybackstra says:

Also, I didn’t hear the question that was asked. Did the question relate to both his and Tex’s struggles?

          • fongy2 says:

            Not at all.
And to me it was just another indication as to who this low life
            really is.
            No one was talking
about either Tex nor even ARod’s struggles until
            lastnight.If he wanted to say he hadn’t been hitting(or fielding)up to par,fine.But,you bring a
            teammate into it?C’mon!
This is why no one likes the guy anyplace he’s been.

    • metsfan4decades says:

I believe McCarver and/or Buck did bring up the ARod steroid scandal last night. I was watching the game on my PC, but had the sound on mute, listening to something else for awhile. I was reading on a Yankee blog that McCarver was so obviously Philly biased and it was just like him to bring up the ARod steriod scandal last night, blah, blah, blah.

      • fongy2 says:

I’d like a yankee fan to give just one example where he’s been
Philly biased. But ya know with yankee fans
if you so much as say
        philly is the defending champs,you’ve
insulted them and the great yankee tradition.
Just another reason why they’re impossible
        to take!

        • mattsmith says:

Buck and McCarver are NOT NOT NOT Philly biased.

        • metsfan4decades says:

Oh, here’s another good reason - comment from a Yankee fan on a Philly blog:

‘Somebody should have told the Phillies that this isn’t the NL’s version of a NY baseball team. Predictions, joking around and making dumb face on the field, taking shots at the Yankee fan in press conference’s does not fly. Both Jeter and Posada have that Michael Jordan killer insinct, you put them into a position where they have to save face…and have.’

Oh to have a 2000 rematch and beat the pants off them. That would shut those Yankee fans up for awhile…

          • fongy2 says:

            They’re time will come….
            a couple yrs from
            now when ARods done,Jeter can’t
            move @SS
            Posada can’t Catch anymore
            A.J.s hurt and
CC is 350lbs w/a sore arm
while the yanks are still on the hook for a couple hundred mil.

            • gategem says:

By then the Yankees’ revenue sources will have grown to the point where the Yankees will be able to spend an additional $200 million and bring in the players to win another championship. lol

          • whataputz says:

if we get to the World Series, i want no part of the Yankees. I want to see an actual World Series, not a stupid everybody is going to complain about NY WS. As a Met fan who didn’t get to see ‘86, I’d love to be able to watch the Mets in an actual World Series, were I can actually for once be able to say to Yankees fans “O you’re talking smack about the Mets? Where are your Yankees..o thats right playing golf, while we are playing baseball. I have literally been able to say this once in my life, and Yadier Molina proceeded to break my heart.

  5. prismo says:

Hey, has anyone heard anything about Newsday changing its new pay policy? The entire site seems to be available again, and I’m pretty sure it was supposed to be pay by now.

  6. I just can’t get excited about these “before they actually happen” shirts and books and other commemoratives. They are a fact of production schedule realities. At least some poor people in a third world country will put them to good use.

  7. whataputz says:

This question goes to Prismo, or I guess just any Mets fan rooting for the Yankees? How can you root for the Yankees to win the World series? And Why do you even hate Philly so much?

Philly is a good team. They don;t buy their team, they’ve got clutch players that aren’t necessarily superstars, but get it done when it counts (such as Victorino or Werth, Utley in my book is a superstar.) They built their team pretty muchf rom scratch. Rollins, their own player, victorino, garbage from Dodgers that they turned into gold, werth was the same deal, howard is their own, utley is their own. They are a real baseball team. Do you know whats going to happen to them when Werth and alot of these guys hit the market? They are going to lose them! Why? Because the laws of baseball actually apply to them. Whereas the Yankees can do whatever they want. They have the most obnoxious, stupid, annoying fans in the world. All we are going to hear now is how historically wonderful this WS is with their new BS wiffle ball Stadium. O but their going to lose their team right, because now they’re all talented and need big contracts? Wrong, in fact they will probably just add another superstar or two to sure up their outfield and maybe bring in Lackey to fill in the #5 spot in their rotation. How can you have a soul and root for the Yankees? and fine, fine the Phillies did embarrass and call out the Mets, but A. Its not like the Mets didn’t prompt them to. B. They actually have a reason to be obnoxious to us, because we are the big market team of their division, the big city slickers, who dance and show their team up. C. I understand wy a Philly fan would hate us. D. They represent the National league, and our division, so you should root for them.

    • fongy2 says:

      Except for representing the NL
      East,I couldn’t agree more!
The only thing in this life that I have such a distaste
for which borders on hate is
      the yanks and (almost all)
      their fans.
Sorry,I know its terrible but its true.

    • prismo says:

I went to college in central Pennsylvania and now work with several Phillies fans. Trust me, I have my reasons to hate all things Philadelphia.

    • Kingman 26 says:

Well, I pretty much totally agree.

It is one thing for us or the Phils or the Angels or Red Sox or Cubs to spend $115–145 million, but the Yanks spend $200+. Or about 40% more than the 2nd highest spending team. Completely ridiculous.

Think Billy Beane or Theo Epstein would ever finish behind the Yanks if they could spend $200 million? Think the Yanks would ever win a thing if they had to spend $140 million?

The Phils have done an amazing job of putting together a team, even if they lose it tonight.

Whiny Met fans should be ashamed of the classless and silly blubbering at the Phils this year. They play hard and well, and have done an amazing job the last three years.

      • prismo says:

And the Yankees don’t play hard and well? You should be ashamed of being a close-minded ignoramus.

        • whataputz says:

because if you don’t play hard, they will just replace you with another superstar.

        • Kingman 26 says:

Well Prismo, first off I most definitely did not say that the Yanks don’t play hard–did you read that in my post, or are your eyes still too clouded with Phillie tears?

I will VERY enthusiastically say that you have most definitely set yourself apart in a really impressive way with your weeks and weeks of whining about the Phils and rooting for the Yanks.

Believe it or not, some Met fans with more than a few years of history behind them actually might find your position unbelievable.

I just find it childish and really obnoxious. And I am sick to death of your arrogant, sanctimonious whining about the Phillies.

          • prismo says:

There’s a huge difference between whining and trash-talking for fun. Some of my best friends are Phillies fans and we give each other a hard time about various sporting events daily, but I would never say they or I whine.

Once I got past the end of the Mets season, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this post-season. I have no idea what you mean by “Phillie tears” - because I’ve enjoyed every minute of this post-season, even when the Phillies have won. I love baseball, first and foremost.

I can root for whomever I want to root for - and you can too. I don’t give half a damn if you pronounce your manlove for the Phillies here, so why would you care if I’m cheering the Yanks on?

Some human beings with more than a few years of life experience actually might find you immature.

Finally, I hope you choke on a cheesesteak. ;)

            • prismo says:

Furthermore, both my mom and brother are die-hard Yankees fans (my parents were a mixed marriage). It’s nice having the whole family rooting for the same team for once as this is the first time in my life I’m cheered for the Yanks.

      • gategem says:

There is another way to look at it. The Yankees business office has done an outstanding job of developing revenue sources on and off the field both local, national and international (the Cowboys under Jerry Jones have done a similar job) that they can easily afford to acquire these players. Now they could reinvest their finances in a Ponzi scheme or additional private Jets but they choose to reinvest it back into the team. This is not only great for the fans but helps to keep those sources of revenue flowing. Whereas football has a salary cap to prevent someone like Jerry Jones from doing what the Yankees do in baseball, baseball sadly does not. So I don’t know how you can blame the Yankees approach when it is incredibly successful and within the rules of baseball.

        • Kingman 26 says:

You are absolutely and completely correct in many ways; but this is not at all great for the fans of other teams in other cities.

I think the salary cap is one of many ways the NFL runs circles around MLB and the NBA and NHL.

And the amazing thing is that except for the years of about 1965-75 and 82-93, the Yanks have largely been this way since the 1920s!

      • mattsmith says:

I’m convinced Kingman is the only sane Mets fan in the word :)

    • metsgirl31 says:

I happen to completely disagree with your post and I have also never rooted for another NL East team in the playoffs, not even when the Marlins played the Yankees in 2003. That’s just my personal choice. I don’t ask anyone to agree.

That being said, its completely useless to keep having this discussion. Everyone’s choice one way or the other is based on emotion and no one is going to change their mind at this point. Emotions are subjective. I think the one thing we can ALL agree on is that we all want the WS to be over, no matter who wins.

    • metsfan4decades says:

What does Philly being a good team have to do with Met fans hating them and/or not wanting to root for them?
The Braves had a good team too in the 90s and you wouldn’t catch me rooting for them in post season.

It’s called a division rival. Doesn’t have to be based on any facts.

And no, I don’t like the Yankees either and never have. That’s why this WS sux….
Not ‘rooting’ for either one to win. Rather just rooting more for either/or team to lose.

Can’t agree with your reasoning at all. I ’should’ root for the Phils? No, anymore than I rooted for the Braves of the 90s in post season.

And sorry, Philly fans justified in being obnoxious to us? Really?

    • jaydh says:

Like i’ve said before, its tough to root for a team with players like Rollins that is constantly making cocky predictions and victorino who complains and is a dirty player. Also, maybe if the phillies didnt always complain when the mets were celebrating or happy.

    • dirtysanchez says:

Ok well I hate the phillies because
      A) they are obnoxious and talk to much
      B) they are the most hypocritical team that ive ever seen/heard
      C) their fans are worse than yankee fans
      D) they are our main competititon in our league, why shoudl I like them. Did you like the braves when the won 14 str8

  8. Mr North Jersey says:

Not for nothing, but some of you do understand that it is natural to NOT root for a team you don’t like or are in competition with right?

    • metsfan4decades says:

Well, I certainly do. That’s the point myself and other have been making for a couple of weeks now. Others disagree, thinking it’s far easier to root for the Phils - or the Yankees - depending on their point of view….

    • Kingman 26 says:

Of course; personally I am a bit surprised this year. I do not remember anything like this against the Phils the last two years on the other site.

I am still very surprised that Met fans would choose the Yanks over anyone, even the Phils, but I definitely understand and respect the sentiment.

      • fongy2 says:

        I’m with you Brock.
Having become a Met fan while the yankswere building their mid/late 70s
        dynasty,it was tough
        to stay loyal while
everyone around you was a yank fan.
All the more sweet though when we were real good in the mid/late 80s AND annoying that their were many phoney yankee fans who suddenly liked the Mets.Point is, I live through to much history
        in the 70s,80s,90s and
early this century arguing with yankee fans and their holier then thou attitudes
        to really develop hated
        for some other team and
        their fans.
Sure,I didn’t care for the Braves BUT we all knew their fans were complete phoneys and
guys like Chipper and Rocker were easy to root against. Am I supposed to hate the Nats or Marlins in a couple yrs if they’re good when we are?
And what if we makea run where for a couple yrs we play the same team in the playoffs
        like the Rockies?Am I
supposed to hate them then? As a dyed in the wool, true New Yorker
        who became a Met fan
36/37 yrs ago, theres been simply too much negative history between me(us) and yankee fans and they’re
constant, yearly sense of entitlement,as well as the yankee FO disregard for a players market and how
it effects every other team and their fans.
Many of you may suddenly hate the phillies but there is NO DOUBT in my mind that if THIS philly team was ours, they’d be loved by EVERY Met
fan for their talent, heart, guts, personality and fight.
And Brock is also right about the spending issue.
        There is a huge diff b/t 120/130mil and 200plus.
I respect Jeter and Rivera who are the best players at their positons in the past 15yrs and I respect the hard, everyday workman attitudes guys like Texeira and Swisher have brought to
this team but lets be honest, this is another purchased championship.

        • metsfan4decades says:

          But, but, but…..
It’s very easy to root against Rollins, Victorino and Hamels for many of the same reasons we rooted against Rocker and Chipper.
It just wasn’t the same for me in 2003 though with the Marlins. I think it’s the teams players themselves at the time and some of the bandwagon fans crawling out of the woodwork in Philly the past three years.

Now the Yankees - I’m a 40+ year fan so I understand your sentiment completely and agree as I’m one of those life long Yankee haters.
For some reason though, the current Philly regime annoys me more right now.

          • metsfan4decades says:

And I really hate to say this but…if the Phillies do win, maybe that’s a better idea ’cause they’ll be complacent about upgrading the team. –Instead of getting rid of their crappy 3rd base options, the bench, securing maybe the same #2 we’re going after and shoring up their BP…..

        • Mr North Jersey says:

Everything you said is 100% correct.

          When you say this
“Many of you may suddenly hate the phillies but there is NO DOUBT in my mind that if THIS philly team was ours, they’d be loved by EVERY Met
fan for their talent, heart, guts, personality and fight.”
I hate the team for the same reason I hated the Braves and the same reason the Knicks fans hated the Bulls, because they got in the way of us winning a Championship.

          • whataputz says:

fongy, one of the best posts I’ve ever seen on this site. If the Phillies lose this WS (which is not a stretch), start losing players to FA (probably half of them to the yankees)and dissipate into the “oh the Phillies play baseball?” phillies we are accustomed to, in 10 years the phillies will be irrelevant again. I will never forget having to watch the Yankees and deal with their fans and watch them win as we lose pretty much my entire life.

  9. metfreak says:

I am not rooting for the Yanks but I am rooting for the Philies to lose but either way this is hell for us Met fans and for those of us that still lives in the tri-state are its going to be another week or so of hell because if the Yanks do finish them up tonight we are going to have Yankees shoved down our faces from the news to papers to the parades
