Damn you know it is a slow day in Metsville when the only Mets related story is Jeff Francoeur having surgery to repair a torn tendon in his pinkie. Yes right now the “HIGHWAY TO HELL” World Series is still in effect and I admit I am torn. I still am not rooting for either team but I want this abomination to end ASAP so we can get to the winter meetings and get this hot stove heated up already !!! On the other hand I want this series to go the distance so that the fans on both sides can get that ominous gut wrenching feeling that us Mets fans have been living with for years !!
Ok enough with my pontifications and ON WITH THE INFAMY !!!

Possibly one of the most consistent closers we have ever had - Armando ” EL GORDO” Benitez is 37 (1972) When I say consistent I mean when he was good he was consistently good - but when he was bad well … WATCH OUT !! Cuz he was consistently bad.
Florida Marlins signed outfielder and ( never was) Ryan McGuire of the New York Mets as a free agent on November 3, 2000.
And lest we forget - there are only 153 days until the Mets open the 2010 season against Florida at Citi Field.
Thanks for mentioning Benitez… I’m getting flashbacks to some rather horrific scenes from 2000…
Benitez reminds me a little of Ollie. When he was on, he had some nasty stuff that no one could touch. But when he was off, you just held your breath waiting for those balls to connect and go out of the park. You never knew what you would get from him…
I think we disliked Armando then as much as we dislike Ollie now…but Benitez was certainly the better pitcher in his respective role. With the Mets, Benitez had a WHIP under 1.2 and an ERA under 3.00. I realize that Benitez blew some huge game, but these are numbers Ollie will only dream of and never achieve.
True, but for a reliever ERA is not always a good indicator. I would think his BS’s would be quite high as well. But no he was not as bad as we remember.
Can’t argue with the numbers, but as you say, Benitez blew some HUGE games, and conversely Ollie has pitched pretty well in some big games. Just saying.
Not too mention that Benitez makes Ollie look like a MENSA member in comparison.
Watching the game last night….again, to me, it all boils down to pitching, pitching, pitching. Burnett was awful last night and that Philly offense just teed off on him.
I keep saying this but I hope Omar is paying attention.
In MC’s latest post, he calls for a “vital need” for better grammar in Internet mailbags, referring to Marty Noble’s mailbags.
Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
To be fair, I think he was trying to show Noble’s point:
“And while I’m at it, e-mails typed in internet shorthand, all upper case or lower case letters and without punctuation are not as likely to be used as those with legitimate content presented so that it would receive an acceptable mark in grade school.”

I read those Marty Noble answers and blog comments earlier this morning. Had to laugh at some of our Met fans. They’re dead serious when they say Omar better get AGon, Halliday, Holliday and possible Lackey for 2010.

The 9th inning alone last night proved my silver lining theory.
You got the enjoyment of the mighty phils, our big foes, being afraid to use their close in a 3 run game, and almost seeing their set up guy blow the game (with teh mighty brett myers warming up to save him).
But, before myers was needed, the incredible joy of seeing Mr. CLutch postseason himself, Mr. swallows, ground into a mighty Tatis 6-4-3. Could have blown the game wide open, but no, he *gagged* ANd to top it off, mr. 180mill flailing at a ball by his shoes for the K.
Hey, we know that one of these disliked teams had to win, so I am concentrating on the “positives”!
and think, all the yankee fans are now sweating out the possibility of seeing another epic PS collapse. High comedy!
maybe the yankers get swept out at home, and they can Girardi for panicing and going with the 3 man rotation. That also would be fun.
and if it happens, what odds do you think you could have gotten in vegas that the mets would keep and the yankees fire their manager?

I don’t see any way that Girardi gets fired. I think making it to the WS alone cemented the continuation of his management.
With the exception of Rivera, I believe I’ve seen just about every team’s closer in this post season choke. And the Phils….Lidge is so bad - as Stick pointed out, they refused to even put him in last night in a 3 run game in the 9th. Went with Madson, who isn’t much better and he almost gave it up as well.
High comedy indeed…
Rivera lost game 7 of the 2001 WS.
We as Met fans have a lot of experience with and knowledge of “chokes.” What greater choke than losing game 7 of a WS?
Benitez was a far better pitcher than Ollie
and b/t/w was better than Billy Wags.
Although they were pretty close with
similar profiles.Lots of saves,nice
stats,couldn’t be counted on at all in really,really big spots.
