This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty 11-19-09
Posted by rustyjr on 6:06am, Thursday November 19th 2009
Well except for some reports of cosmetic changes being made to Citi Field , and Wally Backman’s quote about rampant apathy amongst the Mets minor league players, there hasn’t been much ” hard news ” trickling out from the Mets fall out shelter ( that would be located in the Wilpon / Katz seating area for all of you that can afford it !). I am just wondering why we haven’t heard much rumblings in the way of potential trades, and I am getting a wee bit nervous when I keep hearing that our cross town nemesis - The Yankmees might have serious interest in either John Lackey or Roy Halliday. Yes I know that it is only speculation and they might not be interested in a big name ticket this year - but remember nobody saw their signing of Mark Teixeira coming either. So I don’t mean to get paranoid here but follow my warped logic and tell me what you think. The Mets go in full bore on either Lackey or Halliday, the Yanks being the bullies that they are feel threatened that the Mets might steal their thunder both on the field and off decide that they have the budget to absorb either of their two contract demands , and pull the rug from under us leaving us to sign the likes of Joel Pinero or Randy Wolf ( or as I like to refer to it as Kevin Appier/ Steve Traschel part Duex). Think about it - just think about it - I am shuddering at the possibility.

” Are they in on Lackey / Halliday?”
With that said - ON WITH THE INFAMY !!!
On this day in 1991, the Pittsburgh Pirates claimed outfielder, Terry McDaniel of the New York Mets on waivers .He played in all of 23 games for the Mets in ‘91 ending the season with a anemic .207 batting avaerage and a paltry two R.B.I’s.
Colorado Rockies signed thirdbase man and outfielder - Howard “HoJo” Johnson of the New York Mets as a free agent on November 19, 1993. It was a sad day for me as a older teenager because HoJo was one of the last links of that magical ‘86 season. And he more than adequately filled Ray Knight’s shoes at third base while becoming one of the most feared power bats in the Mets line-up. He tried making a comeback with the Mets in ‘97 but retired during spring training. As we now know he is the the much loved or maligned - (depending how you feel) batting coach for the Mets.
And don’t forget - Mo Vaughn says “There be only 137 days until the Mets open the 2010 season against Florida Marlins at Citi Field.” “Marlins?!? “Mmmmm I loves me some fish - especially fried fish or some gumbo - but not poached !”

Its always nice to see pics of big Mo and his family . I am giving them a chance all these rumors seems to be coming from Mr Wrong and thats Jon Heyman and lets hope he is wrong again
I hope we get Lackey or Halladay but as I have said all offseason it’s not the end of the world if we don’t. There are many more ways to get back to the top than just 2 players.
I’d love to see fans complain if the Mets got Pineiro, Wolf, and AGonz. That’s $23 mil, which leaves room to sign more players to fill out the team. Speaking of which, I hope they get someone to help out Pedro in the bullpen, so he doesn’t have to pitch so much this season…I know he’s a workhorse, but I can’t help but worry about his arm.
I’ve been thinking that about Pedro, too. He’s been nothing short of stellar at his job, but you can’t keep using him in half the team’s games every season.
Fans would be smart to complain if Omar chooses Wolf and Pineiro over getting Lackey or Halladay.
Check out Pineiro’s career. He’s Oliver Perez. Last year was his first remotely good year since 2003.
Wolf would be fine to possibly add WITH Halladay or Lackey.
We aren’t going to win no matter how many we score without adding a serious 1 or 2 level starter to this team, unless Ollie and Maine revisit 2007 and Pelf revisits 2008, which is all far from likely.
And look at Lackey…he’s consistent, but he’s NOT an ace. Sorry, a lifetime 3.81 ERA (3.83 last season) is nothing special. It’s good, but not even very good.
Agreed that Lackey is NOT an Ace. He is however a solid #2. Again I hate slotting. He is a solid pitcher much like Lowe last year but neither are worth elite pay.
Even more than the pay, I’m worried about the years. It’s tying the team’s payroll up by $16-18MM a year for ~4 years with a non-elite player. Just seems like there are better ways to go.
Actually, his ERA is OK for the AL, and he led the AL in ERA in 2007.
I totally agree Lackey is not elite and is not Halladay which is why I prefer Halladay, but have you actually looked at Pineiro’s stats for the 5 years prior to 2009? He was somewhere between mediocre and horrible every year. Lackey is consistently good, every year, year in and year out.
Pineiro had a 6.40 ERA in 2006 in a serious pitcher’s park in Seattle.
Love the graphics…
I too hope we get one of either Lackey or Halladay. True, might still have a competitive team w/o either one but only if Omar more than adequately fills the holes….
I’m not too worried about getting a big name. We all know Omar will do that. Just gotta make sure he addresses the other positions too.
There tons of options just gotta choose the right one.
Completely agree. I don’t think any of us can actually say “Nope, Holliday, Wolf, Marquis and Molina won’t get it done” no more than we can say “Yes, Halladay, Byrd and Barajas will get it done”
I think there are a ton of options this offseason to make us competitive again.
