These guys don’t cost a pick, worth a shot?

Posted by trs86 on 9:33am, Wednesday December 2nd 2009

Looking at the names of FA from the link provided in the previous post I pulled a few names that intrigue me.  Of course I am going to hear the chorus of “Mets don’t need to be worrying about these guys they need difference makers” from some.  However I realize and I am sure most of you do as well, that the Mets need stars AND role players.  The following list could provide some candidates for the second group.

Bard (still young for this group of catchers, decent backup guy), Bako, Jose Molina

Blalock, Gload, Hinskie,

LaRoche (I would be all over this one)

Hairston, Polanco, Uribe, Gritty McHudson

Lopez (Another guy who now that he does not cost a pick becomes even more enticing.)

Glaus (Mentioned before, I think would be a perfect platoon guy for Murphy and could take Tatis’s spot for 3B backup.)

Ankiel, Dye

Cameron (Not sure he has been mentioned on here…)

Nady (Another good pickup for platoon guy with Murphy and taking Tatis spot)

Padilla, Myers

Gregg, Calero, Dotel, Hawkins, Lyon, Ohman,

Oliver (Good for him, finally not offered arbitration so he can seek whatever team he wants without the type A hovering over)

See any you like?

Nice post and fine comments TRS. Agreed on LaRoche, Oliver, and Nady as a backup/platoon guy.

Who’s this Cameron guy you speak of??

  2. DNDJohan aka kistics says:

I believe Benji Molina wasn’t offered Arb as well.

All over LaRoche at 1st. Oliver coming back would be a good fit for the pen. Terrified of Glaus, I don’t think steriods can keep him together any longer.

cameron isnt going to happen…he wants to play center. It would be 05 all over again(hopefully w/o that vicious collision). Alot of good names out there now after the arb period is over. So let me get this str8, if a team doesnt offer a player arb…no matter what type they fall in, the signing team wont have to surrender a dft pick?

I’m all over this Troy Glaus thing.
There’s a signing which makes alot of sense.
Not so much with LaRouche. I brought
him up a few times during the season
but at this point doesn’t seem like
much of an improvement over Murp.

How do we know if he is that much of an improvement? What we do know about LaRoche is that he hit .278 .357 .487 .844 last year and has a career line of .274 .343 .491 .834 over 3230 PA and knows how to play 1B.
What we do know about Murphy is that he hit .266 .313 .427 .741 last year and has a career line of .275 .331 .437 .768 over 707 PA.

To me that extra 70 points in OPS and the experience at 1B makes it a huge upgrade.
