Rumors and just plain ole out there ideas

Posted by trs86 on 8:15am, Friday December 4th 2009

Zach Links from MLBTR provides the following story: Royals Expecting Interest In DeJesus and Meche

The reason I am interested in this story is that the Royals were one of the teams mentioned as potential suitors for Pagan.  Could there be a deal that sends the Royals a package including Pagan for DeJesus, giving the Mets a decent LF and Meche filling a backend of the rotation guy.  Total salary added would be around 16.7 million minus whatever players we trade.

Now the out there idea.  Most of our readers know my lack of fondness for Orlando Hudson.  However, it appears as thought the Phillies ask Hudson to make the switch to 3B before giving Polanco 3/18. (Odds & Ends: Hudson, Pujols, Gonzalez, D-Backs) That spot is now not there for Gritty McHudson.  The Redsox were thought to be interested but then: Red Sox To Sign Marco Scutaro. That spot is now not there for True Grit.  The Dodgers need a 2B but seem to have no interest in The Grit Dawg.  Could it be possible that Hudson could be left out in the cold again?  Is it possible that his love for the Mets would allow him to come to the Mets as a utility guy that would play 2B, 3B and maybe other positions?  If the Phillies were willing to consider Hudson at 3B as a starter….

By the way if this comment section ever gets too rational for you and even the Metsblog comment section leaves you looking for something more zany you should really head over to MLBTR and read the comment section in any post related to the Mets.

“My recomendation would be to trade:
Reyes to Boston for 3 prospects
Beltran to NYY,SF, Cubs, Mil, Bos, Bal = 2 prospects
Sanatana: Anyone who has been linked to Halladay (why get the 2nd best pitcher, when you could get the best pitcher at the same price) = 3 prospects
Wright(I know Mets fans would hate this, but I seriously think he is overratted, and I like him…) to anyone = 3 prospects”

At this point I have no idea anymore what Lackey or Holliday will get or even what it would take to get Halladay or the contract he would get. The information coming out is EVERY direction.

So my question is IF it’s true that Lackey will cost 100 million like Heyman keeps reporting and that the Mets can’t get Halladay would this get us at least competitive in the wild card?

Trade for DeJesus and Meche, sign Wolf, bring in Hudson anyway (while looking to trade Castillo), trade for Wiggington (Tatis replacement) That would cost somewhere IMO around uh… 30 million.

Lineup, you can feel free to change order and play matchups
Reyes, Hudson, Wright, Beltran, Frenchy, DeJesus, Murphy, Santos

    Johan, Meche, Wolf, Pelfrey, Maine/Perez

Interesting part is that it would really in most cases only tie the Mets hands this season and possibly next for Wolf and Meche?

That line-up is missing the extra power bat that Omar has continued to say he wants to get. Dejesus his 13 homers last year. I’m not saying Omar’s definitely going to get Holliday or Bay, but even a Mike Cameron (25HR) type power threat is what I believe he’s look for, either in LF or at 1B.

      • trs86 says:

Good thing about Dejesus is that he is cheap, most likely half the price of Cameron and 7 years younger. Their slugging percentage was separated by 18 points but OPS Cameron only had a 14 point edge.

That lineup would be something like

        15
        8
        20
        30
        18
        12
        12
        8
In my opinion that is not that much different than what the Dodgers or Angels put out there last season. Not to mention that the 20 and 30 from Wright and Beltran as well as the 18 and 15 from Frenchy and Murphy have the chance to improve as well.

        • prismo says:

Dejesus definitely has a sufficient SLG%, but I think when Omar says power bat, he means more than 13 home runs. It might not make perfect baseball sense, but hey, it’s Omar! I guess we’ll see…impossible to predict who Omar will get for LF I believe.

  3. prismo says:

Hudson wouldn’t get much time as a utility player (barring a terrible injury to someone) - and they’d be way overpaying him for it. I don’t see that happening.

I’d be up for your trade scenario, but Dejesus lacks the power that the Mets are looking for. If they did that, you know Omar would have to look for a power bat to play 1B.

    • trs86 says:

Yeah, maybe they look into Delgado for 1B but if things are not going to work out perfect for the Mets then I think that would at least get them competitive for next year while keeping most of their best prospects.

That might be enough power though, pending on Wright and Beltran.

As for Hudson, why not reduce Castillo to a platoon guy. Also with Hudson as a switch hitter I would expect he could pick up 1B as easily as Murphy or Tatis did. I could imagine him getting as many ab’s as Castillo AND hopefully the Mets dumping Castillo somewhere along the way.

      • prismo says:

You know better than that! The Mets are paying Castillo to be a 2B, and he’s going to be the starting 2B. (unless he’s traded)

        • trs86 says:

Think about last year and how the planned on going with almost a Castillo Cora platoon. I think they very well may change their mind. Like I said if you brought in Wiggy and Hudson was willing to play multiple positions you could just about dump Castillo by just eating half his salary.

  4. trs86 says:

Dang it seems like every news guy is still insisting the Mets will get ANOTHER catcher.
    This from Rubin:

“Catchers Henry Blanco and Chris Coste officially joined the Mets on Thursday, with the Mets announcing both players’ one-year deals. The expecation is Blanco will serve as the backup catcher, while Coste will be in Triple-A, presumably with Josh Thole and Omir Santos.”

So now AAA is going to have Coste, Thole and Santos? I just don’t get that at all. That would be a complete waste of resources. I don’t believe it at all.

  5. CaseStreet says:

That hudson idea is as out there as my polanco and slappy platoon idea

  6. trs86 says:

    Interesting suggestion from Cerrone.

“i wonder if holliday would be willing accept a deal like beltran, paying him just $10 million next season, say, $15 million in 2011, then $20 million each of the final four years, i.e., a six-year, $105 million deal…”

If he only received 10 million that certainly would free up enough cash to go after some short term guys like Wolf and or trading for Harang.

  7. trs86 says:

Another question, could Santos or Thole be trade bait? Would the Royals be interested in Pagan, Santos as cheap productive starters?

I hate the idea but for some reason EVERY media outlet still sees the Mets getting Molina.

  8. whataputz says:

Maybe Heyman and Molina are in cahoots here and there’s money in it for Heyman?

  9. fongy2 says:

You’re wrong TRS on DeJesus & Pagan.
DeJesus is a pretty good all round
long time starter while Pagan has never shown himself to be any more than a 4th OFer.
Having said that, if Omar’s idea is indeed to move Santos in order to bring in Molina for millions more,
    it’s a bad idea.
    A Pagan&Santos forDeJesus&Meche move
would be a bad idea as well,And I like both Royals.
Doing that and adding Molina would
pretty much bust the budget and theres
no way adding those players, even at
their best would greatly improve us.
