Everyone Is A Overactive Thyroid Expert.

Posted by Mr North Jersey on 9th March 2010

Breaking News: “Test results today on Jose Reyes have confirmed that Jose has an overactive thyroid.”

That is from the official Press Release from the Mets. It then goes on to say,

“Jose will remain in New York to await results of additional blood tests that will help further determine his treatment. Those test results are not expected back before Thursday. We will share more information as it becomes available.”

How we get from that to “The issue is thought to be fully treatable and should only keep Reyes out for about a month.” I have no idea. Especially when the source used Adam Rubin on Twitter says only the following.

Jose Reyes apparently does have an overactive thyroid. … The team will issue a release shortly.

So I figure maybe someone else in the media is reporting an inside source that Reyes is expected to miss a month so I do a search and I am still unable to find a news agency that says according to sources Reyes should be only out about a month.

In fact the closest I can find is from Marty Noble where he says “No matter what is decided, the results of the third set of blood tests will delay Reyes’ training camp at least one more day and perhaps longer. The best-case scenario the Mets had envisioned had him returning to camp Wednesday and playing by the weekend.”

Perhaps longer, that is far from suggesting a month.

So what do we know? We know that

  1. Jose Reyes  has an overactive thyroid
  2. Jose will remain in New York pending results of additional blood tests to help determine his treatment.
  3. Those test results are not expected back before Thursday.
  4. Jose Reyes will not be playing for the Mets this Thursday.

Oh and we will know more when information becomes available.

So let’s stop speculating and saying Reyes will be out for a month till we know otherwise.

Mets Spring Training “Day 6″ Recap.

Posted by Mr North Jersey on 23rd February 2010

If your getting home and wondering if you missed any Mets News today here is some of today’s Mets highlights.

Baseball America released their Top 100 List and 4 Mets made the Top 100.

  • 56 Jennry Mejia, rhp, Mets
  • 62 Ike Davis, 1b, Mets
  • 77 Fernando Martinez, of, Mets
  • 88 Wilmer Flores, ss, Mets

Staying with Baseball America they also help a online chat session with Ike Davis. One of the questions asked was “Who were your favorite players coming up as a young kid? And who’s game do you try to pattern yourself after?” he replied, Growing up I liked to watch Mark Grace, John Olerud, Bonds, Steve Finley, and Chipper Jones. I loved watching power hitters that were at the top of their game.”

Noah K. Murray of the The Star-Ledger gave us this interesting photo of Fred Wilpon and Omar Minaya. Looks like Wilpon doesn’t want to buy what Minaya is selling.

Adam Rubin of The NY Daily News reports that “A Mets official said the team would sign a remaining free agent LHP to complement Pedro Feliciano if Joe Beimel would accept a Rod Barajas-type contract (one year, $1 million).”

Jason Bay arrived today at Mets camp and sat down and did a 15 minute interview with reporters that Brian Costa of The Star-Ledger made available here. One of the questions he answered was,

Do you get a bad rap as a defensive player?
“Ah, people have their opinions. There’s some numbers that put me in a good light and obviously some that don’t. I’ve said it 100 times, I know I’m not Torii Hunter out there, but I feel like I’m an above-average outfielder, I feel like I can get to the balls that I’m supposed to get to, I know my limitations, I know my strengths, and I play to them.”

Frenchy asks the best question toward the end of the interview. “How bout that USA hockey team!”

Finally if you want to see Mejia throw off a mound SNY has a field reporter that provided video footage. :-)

Fred Speaks !!!

Posted by rustyjr on 20th February 2010

Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News had conducted a interview with mets owner Fred Wilpon which you can read here http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/mets/

I found the interview with Fred to be very insightful. He seems to care about the Mets and called this past off season ” torture”. He also claims he is a Mets fans and feels the frustration of the common fan, But where Fred loses me is when he said that the Mets have ” one of the best medical staffs in all of baseball “. I don’t know if he was referring to the Hospital for Special Surgery or the Mets training staff itself, but Fred comes across as being a bit delusional on that topic in my opinion. I also have to take Fred’s noncommittal answer to the security of Omar Minaya and Jerry Manuel’s jobs as being a subtle way of saying if this is a repeat of last season then they are gone.

” Fred sez the Mets will be owned by the Wilpons for future generations  - OY !”

Reyes Could Bat Third

Posted by CaseStreet on 19th February 2010

Jose Reyes

Jose Reyes

According to Mike Puma, Jerry Manuel is planning on batting Reyes third in the lineup.

“Reyes, in my opinion, has evolved,” Manuel said. “I could really stretch our lineup out if [Reyes] is able to handle that spot.”

Manuel went on to say he envisions Pagan leading off, followed by Castillo or Murphy, then Reyes, Bay, Wright, and Francouer. Additionally, Manuel hopes “the experiment is successful, allowing him to perhaps keep Reyes in the third spot when Beltran returns.”

According to Brian Costa, “Manuel said if Reyes is doing well in the No. 3 spot when Beltran returns, he would keep Reyes there and bat Beltran second, fourth or fifth.”

Adam Rubin has Reyes’ reaction:

Asked if it’s different now compared with last spring training, when he seemed upset with the prospect, Reyes said: “I didn’t say I didn’t want to do it. I didn’t say that. It’s no different. Whatever spot he puts me in the lineup, I’m going to be able to do that. Whatever is best for the team, I’m going to do it. So let’s see what happens.

A few of us, including trs, have been hoping Manuel would make this move, especially since Reyes won’t be asked to run as much batting third. With Beltran out, it makes even more sense. What’s really interesting is that Manuel suggested Reyes could keep the spot when Beltran returns.
