The Next Captain Of The Mets Is Not Wright But…

Posted by Mr North Jersey on 29th April 2010

captkirk…. Kirk Nieuwenhuis. Yes while David Wright may be the unofficial Team Captain down on the farm another Baby Met quietly on the verge of possibly surpassing Fernando Martinez if Martinez continues to be injury prone (currently Martinez is day to day with a lower back strain) as the Mets #1 outfield prospect is the Mets 100th pick in the 3rd round of the 2008 MLB Draft Kirk Nieuwenhuis.

Nicknamed by many “Capt Kirk” for the obvious Star Trek reference, Nieuwenhuis has gotten off to a very good start down in AA with the Binghamton Mets. He is currently hitting .313/AVG .835/OPS 2/HR 7/2B 11/RBI all out of the leadoff spot. He is a big 6’3”/210 lbs 22 year old Center Fielder that has been described as having “defensive chops in center and a well-rounded offensive game with some speed, patience and power.

Recently Adam Rubin wrote a nice article on him where he talks about the former Big 12 football recruit. It is a must read of a player that just may be the Mets next Center Fielder sooner than you may think.
