This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty - The Positivity Is Growing Edition

Posted by rustyjr on 23rd February 2010

I know what you are thinking and so here lies the honest answer -No my headline today is not meant to be a snarky, sarcastic commentary of how spring training in Port St Lucie has been going so far. From the accounts that I have been reading , this team thus far is showing signs of chemistry, along with a myriad of feel good stories. First off  Carlos Beltran reported to camp yesterday , went into a closed door meeting with Omar Minaya and when he emerged he was quoted as saying that he ” cares about his legacy as a Met “. This quote - and the fact that he is in spring training right now when he isn’t required to speaks volumes in my opinion. From what I have been reading, Japanese import Ryota Igarshi has been wowing the coaching staff with his  curveball and he might be on the fast track for the eighth inning set up man’s spot. David Wright is looking more like Tony Atlas than Gomer Pyle  with his new weight lifting routine, Rod Barajas has passed his physical and is expected to arrive at camp today and even Gary Matthews Jr. seems happy to be here - maybe I am wrong about him and he can be the cagey old veteran that helped tutor the rookies last year just like Gary Sheffield did before he threw his temper tantrum because the Mets wouldn’t give him a contract extension.  Hell even Mike Francesa couldn’t make my optimism waver !!!I can’t believe I am drinking the Kool Aid  - OMAR !?!? ARE YOU JIM JONES IN DISGUISE !!!!!

                                                                                    Mr. Met sez:

” Be optimistic - or no t-shirt for you !!!”

And with that said … HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!

Happy Birthday wishes go out to the following.

The Mets first Rookie Of The Year Candidate , and their all time hit by pitch leader, Ron Hunt is 69 (1941) .

Pitcher  from the ‘67 - ‘68 teams, Don Shaw is 66 (1944) .

One of the Mets all time great second basemen - Ken Boswell is  64 (1946) . Unfortunately due to a dispute with the current Mets organization, Don didn’t attend last years 40th celebration of the ‘69 Mets World Series team.

One of the most hated Mets players ever ( and rightfully so !) -Bobby Bonillia is 47  (1963) . Bobby made it very hard to root for. Yes he put up great power numbers in his first stint with the Mets, but his lack of hustle and his run ins with the media soured his relationship among the Mets fans. This year starts the defered payment plan that the Mets set up  when they bought him out of his contact in ‘99. He will be by the Mets paid for the next 35 years.

Utility outfielder from the ‘08 team - Chris Aguillia is 30 today. (1979)

And remember , there are 41 Tom Seavers until the Mets open the 2010 season against the  Florida Marlins at Citi Field.

Grave Notions: Why Gary Matthews Jr. Is Here

Posted by GravediggerHebner on 23rd January 2010

—————————————————————————————————-

I spent all day yesterday responding to things like this, so before I agree with you TKFJ and move on to the next botched move, I’m going to one last time lay it out the way I see it.  I am not asking you or anyone else to agree with my perspective, I do it simply to dispute the notion that “consensus is the move made no sense” because I consider that to be a false statement.

Yesterday Mr. North Jersey, who has made his disdain for Omar in general and this move in specific well known, published a series of links to Met-specific blogs and their reactions to the trade.  There was hardly a consensus to be found in those.  So even someone with strong negative feelings about the trade was able to find, accept the existence of and publish links to people with opinions that did not jive with his own.

There is a cottage industry in the blogosphere built around The Contest. What The Contest involves is a essentially a running commentary by those who know better about New York Mets General Manager Omar Minaya and Kansas City Royals GM Dayton Moore, and how long either can abstain from making a bad move, and how long after one does the other will be unable to resist topping him.  You can read more about The Contest here.  It is certainly a ripoff of the plot of an episode of Seinfeld, ironically a Met fan, and a man who has a greater sense of humor in one drop of his perspiration than a roomful of sabermetricians.  It is my opinion that in an effort to extrude fun from this contest, the reaction to an otherwise run-of-the-mill, unspectacular, uninteresting player move has gone berserk.  But I digress.

I personally feel that prior to this trade the Mets had depth issues with the center field position.  You can believe or not that the Mets had bullpen depth.  I believe they did but I respect your right to disagree.  I think that trying to assemble a Major League bullpen of 7 guys from a pool of Frankie Rodriguez, Sean Green, Pedro Feliciano, Ryota Igarashi, Nelson Figueroa, Pat Misch, Eddie Kunz, Tobi Stoner, Jack Egbert, Bobby Parnell, Kelvim Escobar, Clint Everts, Arturo Lopez, Jay Marshall, R. A. Dickey and Fernando Nieve is a task that can be accomplished with or without throwing Brian Stokes into the mix.  If anyone feels that Stokes separated himself from this group in any real, positive way, well let’s just say I respectfully disagree.  In that context I consider Stokes expendable.

Now back to the issue of center field depth.  One may in my view rightly complain that the Mets non-tendered Cory Sullivan and Jeremy Reed.  They are both useful reserve outfielders capable of playing center field.  I do not dispute that.  But the fact remains that when they were non-tendered, Carlos Beltran was the healthy starting center fielder for the New York Mets, Angel Pagan was his back up, and Fernando Martinez was the third option.  Currently there is no fourth option that I am aware of unless one is particularly enamored with Jesus Feliciano.

You may disagree with this notion as well but I believe the Mets are best served by having Martinez play every day in AAA, proving that he can stay healthy and perform against that level of competition.  It would be hard for anyone to deny that he was over-matched in 2009 against Major League competition.  So it would seem best for all parties if Martinez is not once again summoned to the Majors prematurely due to injuries.

After the likes of Reed and Sullivan were given their walking papers, lo and behold, a Met player had a health setback.  Right around the same time Beltran’s knee surgery and the bizarre circumstances surrounding it were unfolding, those same two players were signing contracts with other organizations.   Thus a sudden unforeseen opening for depth on the roster and the last two guys who filled it were otherwise employed.

So what is Omar Minaya, the laughingstock GM of the laughingstock New York Mets supposed to do?  Perhaps sign an available free agent, you say.  Why of course, why didn’t Omar The Fool think of that?  Perhaps he did.  Perhaps he also noticed that he’s had a little difficulty attracting free agents recently.  Bengie Molina took less money and no option for a second year and stayed away.  Joel Pineiro took slightly more money and didn’t bother to consider that the Mets might have simply made an opening offer and been willing to increase it.  Since the Beltran fiasco, merely the latest fiasco in a string of fiascos, the Mets have an image problem.  Proponents of The Contest should be well aware of that.  Try attracting a person capable of providing marginal performance in center field on what appears to be a rather temporary basis (assuming Beltran’s healthy return, whoever fills the role will be immediately demoted to 5th OF at best).

So having a job opening for a 4th OF job that, should things go well for a change, will quickly turn into that of 5th OF, I can imagine Omar glanced at the list of available free agents.  Surely at least an office intern did this for him.  Even his greatest detractors must admit that he is probably at least peripherally aware that Reed Johnson is without employment.  Maybe Reed would agree to come to the Mets, team turmoil, for the fair market value of a 5th OF?  Maybe Randy Winn might?  Rocco Baldelli?  Ryan Freel?  If other recent free agents recently spurned fair market value offers from the Mets for jobs that actually involved playing time, why would any of these fellows come here to sit on their asses for 5th OF prices?  They might just risk the mortal injury that often seems to come with playing for the Mets, but surely they’d require a premium for doing so.  That would be wasteful spending, something we often criticize Minaya for.  Suddenly we are begging him to do it for a 5th OF?  Are the same people who wailed and moaned about $2 million for Alex Cora seriously now requesting that Omar shell out that kind of money again for another reserve player?

Maybe Alfredo Amezaga or Endy Chavez would dare to take on such a task.  Personally I think Chavez would.  He might actually be the only professional baseball player on earth who has some positive feelings about playing in a reserve OF role with the Mets.  Alas, he is injured and will not be ready when needed.  Neither is Amezaga expected to be ready, so he’s out.

So Minaya, faced with the need for a 5th OF capable of minimal performance in CF for what is hopefully a temporary period between a potential injury to Pagan and the return of Beltran made a couple of wise (gasp!) decisions.  He decided to make efforts to keep Martinez in the minor leagues where he belongs, and he decided not to pay more than should otherwise be necessary for the services of a 5th OF.  He pulled out his bullpen depth chart and determined that he could spare one of sixteen guys, one who didn’t particularly distinguish himself from the others, certainly not enough to merit the number of exclamations of horror that have permeated the blogosphere in the last 24 hours.

Another fear widely noted has been that which suggests that Matthews Jr. is a clubhouse cancer and that surely he will make demands to start and in doing so disrupt the fragile child-like psyche of the Met roster.  I cannot dispute that Matthews Jr. may cause some turmoil.  He may very well make some demands.  He has stated for the record that he wanted out of Los Angeles because he wanted the opportunity to start.  Little Sarge needs to wake up and smell the coffee.  He’s in no position to make any demands.  And thankfully the Angels wanted to rid themselves of him so much they sent along $21.5 million dollars, meaning the Mets only owe him the fair market salary of a 5th OF.  If he proves to be a disruptive influence with demands to start, much like so many feared that another Gary, Gary Sheffield, would do last year, he is easily cut with little financial loss.  This is win-win for the Mets.  They take a chance that a veteran major leaguer, if lots of other things go wrong, can play a little bit for them, and acquire him by finding one of sixteen guys in a pool of bullpen candidates to send away for him.  Classic change of scenery deal we’ve all witnessed countless times before, with an easy out should it not work.

Instead of being praised for (finally) making a wise decision, Omar Minaya is drawn and quartered by those who know better. All for the sake of a few laughs at another chapter in The Contest.

Byrnes Baby ! Byrnes !!!

Posted by rustyjr on 20th January 2010

Well it is official, Steve Gilbert from MLB.com just reported that the Arizona Diamond Backs have just released firebrand outfielder , Eric Byrnes . Byrnes , who has battled a nagging hamstring injury , was to have made $11MM this year if he had stayed on the Diamond Backs roster.

In the 482 plate appearances he’s made under the deal he had with Arizona , Byrnes hit .218/.271/.382.
Omar pick up the phone and let him be this years Gary Sheffield !! I would rather take a chance on Byrnes , who would make the league minimum than to waste five million dollars on a Randy Winn. Besides can you imagine having Byrnes coming off the bench if and when Carlos Beltran is finally off the disabled list ? It would be one of the best benches in the majors in my opinion !

byrn in it up eric byrnes he ...

” Is Omar Byrnin up the phone lines?!?”

This Day In Mets Infamy - The David Jauss Is Bench Coach Edition 11-18-09

Posted by rustyjr on 18th November 2009

Good Morning my fellow Mets fans .While we were sleeping Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com has reported that the Mets have hired Boston Red Sox coach as Jerry Manuel’s new bench coach. Jauss has also coached for the Baltimore Orioles as well as the Los Angeles Dodgers. He has no managerial experience which leads me to believe one of two things.
1. This hiring was made to take pressure off of Jerry Manuel , so he can focus on managing the team.
or….
2. It paves the way for Wally Backman to make a quick ascension as Mets Manager should Jerry be fired.

And now it is time for your steaming plate of INFAMY !!!

Happy Birthday to one of the original members of that Amazin ‘62 Mets pitching staff -Jay Hook (1936) Jay went 8 -19 with a E.R.A OF 4.99 that season.
Unsung reliever of the ‘69 World Championship team - Cal Koonce would have been 69 (1940) .
The spark plug for the ‘77- ‘80 teams - Steve ” HENDU” Henderson IS 57 (1952) . Many old time Mets fans will remember Steve as being one of the players who were acquired in the Tom Seaver ” Midnight Massacre” deal, but very few remember that he was the runner up to Andre Dawson in the 1977 Rookie of the Year Award voting.
Good Citizen” , and now former Met - Gary Sheffield is 41 today (1968) .
long reliever for the ‘99 team - Allen Watson is 39 (1970) .
One of the “solutions” to the ‘08 bullpen - Matt Wise is 34 today (1975) . Matt pitched a handful of games early on in that season before succumbing to elbow problems. Needless to say he was never seen in a Mets uniform ever again.

Sadly on this date in 1995 , infielder from the mid ’60’s Mets teams ,Charlie Neal passed away.
The New York Mets traded outfielder Pat Howell to the Minnesota Twins for reserve player, Darren Reed on November 18, 1992.

New York Mets traded power hitting ( when he actually could make contact) outfielder Jeromy Burnitz and Joe Roa to the Cleveland Indians for pitchers Dave Mlicki, Paul Byrd, Jerry Dipoto and Jesus Azuaje on November 18, 1994.

Arizona Diamondbacks drafted former Mets pitcher - the late Cory Lidle on November 18, 1997.

Today also marks one of Omar’s best under the radar moves when he traded Mike Cameron to the San Diego Padres for Xavier Nady on November 18, 2005.

Washington Nationals signed pinch hitting specialist Marlon Anderson of the New York Mets as a free agent on November 18, 2005. Why we gave him a two year contract in ‘08 still baffles me !

Atlanta Braves signed Tom Glavine of the New York Mets as a free agent on November 18, 2007. and Mets fans everywhere were not ” devastated
And Finally just remember - there are only 138 days until the Mets open the 2010 season against Florida Marlins at Citi Field.

This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty - THE DAMN I FEEL SO SKEEVEY EDITION 11-11-09

Posted by rustyjr on 11th November 2009

MIKE FRANCESSA IS RIGHT !!! There I said it !!! - and I feel so dirty by admitting it ! But after listening to the fat man’s daily five hour exercise in megalomania I came away with a sense that he is some sick and twisted way actually trying to help us Mets fans . First off Mike kinda pooh pooed the reports that the Mets front office is split in their hot stove philosophy, and they will be aggressive in both the free agent and trade market. He also advocated that Omar should target Roy Halliday as a top acquisition to pair with Johan Santana as the most potent one - two punch in the entire National League. He also stated the Mets must sign Matt Holliday at any cost - citing that the Mets popularity is receding faster than Brian Schneider’s hairline and to not import top flight talent could have serious ramifications for years to come. Fortunately or unfortunately ( which ever way you want to look at it ) The Fat Man has the ear of Fred & Jeff Wilpon along with Omar, So I guess its good to see someone calling them out and railing against the initial reports that the Mets were not inclined to spend so much money this off season . And I agree with the twitter feed of Hot Foot columnist , Anthony DeRosa , in which he points out ” If Holliday & Bay are too expensive for the Mets, your tickets are too expensive for me!!” - Well said Anthony !

, Fred and Jeff Wilpon ...              Mets Season- Going Down Like ...

                                                                    ” ARE YOU LISTENING?”

And now it is time for a steamy pile of INFAMY !!

Happy Birthday to setup man from the ‘06 team -Roberto Hernandez (1964) . Hernandez was a panic move by Omar after Duaner ” Dirty” Sanchez fell victim to a separated shoulder after being involved in a freak car accident while trying to sate his appetite for some Dominican food the fateful July night in Florida. So we traded Left Fielder Xavier Nady to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Hernandez & future headache & financial burden , Oliver Perez. Hernandez pitched well and Ollie pitched the game of his life in game seven of the ‘06 NLCS , albeit the Mets lost (DAMN YOU YADIER MOLINA !!!)

Pitcher Dave Telgheder is 43 (1966) , Dave will forever be known as the first Met to win a subway series against the Yankees. ( or was that Milicki ? - oh well)

Utility infielder José Offerman is 41(1968) .
Jack of All Trades - Damion Easley turns 40 (1969) . I seriously wished that the Mets would have brought him back last season he played almost every infield & outfield position in his two year tenure with the Mets , was a clutch pinch hitter, and had a great clubhouse presence that Alex Cora lacked.
Pitcher Mike Bacsik is 32 (1977) . We obtained him in the deal that also netted us the god awful Roberto Alomar !

The Texas Rangers signed Mets free agent pitcher - “Doc ” Medich on this day in 1977.

New York Mets traded one time prospect Terry Blocker to the Atlanta Braves for Kevin” Not that one” Brown on November 11, 1987.

New York Mets traded faded star closer Mel Rojas to the Los Angeles Dodgers for faded power hitter , Bobby “Ill show you the Bronx” Bonilla on November 11, 1998. I guess we were still paying his salary so he might as well play for the team. In all seriousness Bonillia like Gary Sheffield this year was actually a decent citizen of the Mets clubhouse, and he even contributed somewhat in the ‘99 NLCS against the Braves.

And remember, there are only 145 long , drawn out, tiring more days until the Mets open the 2010 season against Florida at Citi Field

2009 Man Up Champion

Posted by dirtysanchez on 9th October 2009

ITS A TIE!!!

David Wright and Daniel Murphy both have amassed 16 MUA’s a piece. After days of deliberation and bribes(i kid…kind of..), I have decided that real men hit home runs and stay on the field. Since Murph finished with 12 home runs(Wright finished with 10 home runs) and never hit the DL list, your 2009 Man Up Champ is…

Dan "The Iron Man" Murphy

Dan "The Iron Man" Murphy

champ

Daniel Murphy finished with 12 HR’s/.266 avg/63 RBI’s/.417 SLG. Since his first at bat in the 2nd half of 2008, Murph has always been talked about as having an outstanding work ethic. That work ethic showed up every time he stepped into the batters box and earned him a starting spot in 2009. Murphy didn’t waste any time from the close of 2008 with a home run in the season opener of the 2009 season that accounted for the only offense in the game. Unfortunately that high did not last as his defensive short comings began to take center stage. As if on cue, the classic cliche “Things happen for a reason” reared its head in the form of what would turn out to be a season ending injury to Mets 1b man Carlos Delgado. The Mets eased Murphy into the infield where he spent most of his time in AAA. Murph took the bull by its horns and improved at 1b almost on a game basis. Murphy would be only one of two players to play the whole season without hitting the DL, as most of the Mets lineup did. Murph(unexpectedly) would finish the 2009 season as the Mets home run leader. Daniel manned up more than anyone on the Mets this year and is a deserving winner of the 2009 Man Up Championship.

A look at how the other Mets fared in 2009:

David Wright-16 Mua’s

Francisco Rodriguez-14 Mua’s

Jeff Francoeur-12 Mua’s

Bobby Parnell-4 Mua’s

Anderson Hernandez-4 Mua’s
