Recap: Marlins (4) d. Braves (3)

Posted by JoshEngleman on 29th July 2009

Well, that hurt. After taking the lead in the top of the 9th off of a Garrett Anderson solo homer, Soriano gave up a walk, sac bunt and walk off homer to the immortal Ross Gload to give the Marlins the first game of the series.

The Braves got on the board first with an RBI single from Prado. Jurrjens gave it right back in the bottom half, however, with a double from Hanley that scored Nolasco (ugh) and Bonifacio.  Things stayed that way until the top of the 6th, where Chipper led of the inning with a solo shot. Of course, this all led to the rug being pulled out from under us in the 9th. It’s games like this that will be remembered at the end of the season when we finish 2 games out of the Wild Card.

Jurrjens pitched well, going six innings with five strikeouts while walking just one. Anderson had the best day at the plate, going 2-4 with the aforementioned home run. Obviously, the biggest low-light was Soriano’s blown save, but McCann and Kotchman can both take a bit of the blame with dueling 0-4’s.

Kawakami/Johnson tonight. We really need Kawakami to step it up if we have any chance of taking these next two game.  The Vegas line says that we are 41.5% to win tonight. That seems realistic. If we use that number and assume a 55% chance to win tomorrow, we have around a 23% chance to win this series. It could be worse.

Braves Win a Close One, After Another Gonzalez Blown Save

Posted by m1fournier on 16th May 2009

mlb_a_vazquez_400The struggles for Braves closer Mike Gonzalez continue as he gave up a solo home run to Stephen Drew in the top of the 9th to tie the game.

But the Braves were able to load the bases in the bottom of the 9th with 1 out. Yunel Escobar then came up and hit a sac fly that drove in Casey Kotchman off Tony Pena to give the Braves the win in the bottom of the 9th. The final score was 4-3 Atlanta.

One bright spot for the Braves was starter Javier Vazquez, who went 7 innings, allowing 2 runs all int eh 1st inning and striking out 10. It was his 2nd consecutive solid start even though he didn’t get the win tonight. At the plate for the Braves Chipper Jones went 1-3 with his 4th home run of the year. Other than that the RBI’s came from a Yunel Escobar sac fly, and a Jordan Schafer RBI single. The Braves bats and closer continue to be the story of the year for the Braves as once again they get a solid outing from their starter jsut to have it blown by Gonzalez. Look for the Braves bats to get going tomorrow against youngster Max Scherzer, who is winless in his major league career.
