Baker’s double break tie in 8th to win over Cubs

Posted by Rab Bethan on 12:08am, Saturday August 1st 2009

MIAMI (AP)—John Baker drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the eighth inning, and the Florida Marlins beat the Chicago Cubs 5-2 on Friday night.

Pinch-hitter Wes Helms followed Baker with a two-run double.

Chris Volstad and three relievers combined on a seven-hitter against the Cubs, who had scored 12 runs in each of the past two games.

The Marlins have won eight of their last 10 games to surge into NL wild-card contention and were buoyed by the addition of Washington first baseman Nick Johnson minutes before Friday’s trade deadline. He’s expected to be in the lineup Saturday.

Volstad had a solid start, going 6.2 innings with 2 ER, 6 H, 0 BB, and 6 K. He didn’t allow a baserunner through 4 innings and had a shutout going until the 7th when, with two outs and a man on, he laid a meatball to catcher Jake Fox that ended in the bleachers and tied the game at 2-2. He then put to more men on when Fredi Gonzalez lifted him and Dan Meyer came in and finished the inning for him. Behind him, as I repeatedly say has become common play, the bullpen shut the door with Leo Nunez getting his 9th save of the season.

Offensively, the team only had 7 hits all night but hits by John Baker and Wes Helms with 2 outs in the 8th brought in 3 runs to give Brendan Donnelly his first win as a Fish. Hermida continued his 8 game hitting streak, going 3-2 with 1walk and 2 runs scored.

But now that that’s all done it’s time for everyone’s favorite segment, the Craig Counsell Hero of the Game Award!

Tonight’s winner is…

John Baker!

For hitting the go-ahead RBI double, John Baker is your Craig Counsell Hero of the Game Award! Bake also had an incredible month of July, hitting .362/.422/.517 , bouncing back after a disappointing month of June.

It’s also worth mentioning that after the game the Marlins optioned both Brett Carroll and Gaby Sanchez to AAA New Orleans to make room for Nick Johnson and Matt Lindstrom. Fredi Gonzalez said the Marlins wanted to have an extra arm in the bullpen for Badenhop’s start tomorrow.
