Great bounce back win last night, boys. Let’s make it two straight against the Red Birds (39-32). Tonight, the Mets (35-33) will be up against (RHP) Joel Pineiro (5-8 3.76 ERA 1.27 WHIP). Here’s the skinny on Pineiro…
Born:September 25, 1978 in Rio Piedras, P.R.
Drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 12th round of the 1997 amateur draft.
Signed June 7, 1997.
Debut: August 8, 2000
Per MLB.com,
“Pineiro retired 16 straight Tigers on Thursday after giving up four runs in the first inning. He then fell to the ground in pain after striking out Josh Anderson to end the seventh and had to be carried from the field with cramps. Only one of his four runs were earned, and he took the tough-luck loss, sayhing that he was just a little dehydrated and would be fine for his start in New York. Pineiro has lost five straight starts and eight of his last nine after starting the season 4-0.”
Pineiro has played for the Mariners (2000-2006), and Red Sox (2007). He was traded at the 2007 Deadline to the Cardinals.
In Pineiro’s last 3 starts…
(Sat. Jun 13, 2009) St. Louis Cardinals SP Joel Pineiro allowed three runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings Friday, June 12, against the Cleveland Indians, according to The Associated Press. He walked two and struck out six, falling to 5-7 on the season.(KFFL, 11:29am)
He has lost seven of his last eight starts, including four straight. Both of the walks he allowed came with two outs and both runners ended up scoring.(STATS, 5:45pm)
(Mon. Jun 8, 2009)- Pineiro permitted 3 runs on 10 singles and lasted just 5 innings against the Rockies. He took the loss, 7-2.
(Sat. May 30, 2009) - Pineiro threw only 4 innings; a season low. He allowed 4 runs on 6 hits and struck out 3 to the Giants. Giants win 4-2.
Pineiro skipped his previous start due to back spasms. Pineiro is 1-6 with a 4.09 ERA his last seven starts after going 4-0 with a 3.86 ERA in April.(STATS, 4:28pm)
Pineiro last faced the Mets on April 22nd. where he pitched 8 innings and earned the W. He allowed only 2 earned runs on 6 hits while striking out none. He only threw 91 pitches. Cardinals win 5-2.

| Scouting Report | |
| Control: | 77 |
| K-Rating: | 43 |
| Efficiency: | 66 |
The ratings are based on formulas that sum a player’s entire career based on available statistics in our database, including minor league and college data. These scouting scores are to be used as indicatorsof a player’s strength. A career minor leaguer might have a speed rating of 100 though this does not insinuate that he is a better runner than a major leaguer with a speed rating of 90. Though it does indicate that a player was an excellent base-stealer in the minors, we do not know how he would have fared in the majors.

Go get em, boys…
So basically what I take from this is that his fastball isn’t fast, his change up speed differential doesn’t come close to Ron Darling’s recommended 10mph difference, he is on a losing streak, and recently he has left starts due to dehydration and back spasms. It seems the only chance he has is if he brings his best curveball. BRING IT ON!
This guy pitched a gem against us back in April, tho and faced us a couple times last yr. However that was against our A-Team. He doesnt know squat about our B-Team. I like this matchup.
What sticks out in my mind is the 1-hitter he fired against us the final week of the 2007 season. That was awesome (rolling eyes).
It was a 3-hitter…and Castillo was 0-for-4 with an error….
I remember that game like it was yesterday…
3-0 Birds
Nice work there Mr. Rothchild…this guy is the other Mariners bookend of underachievement, along with Gil Meche.
However, he is 2-0 in four starts against us with pretty good stats.
Will be interesting to see if he does well against less familiar–and lesser–Mets….and how Livan handles the Cards. I would imagine that, aside from Pujols, he might do very well…..
Thanks, Eddie Adams. I mean, I mean, I mean… Dirk Diggler!!!
I want a name to be razor sharp, so it can cut glass, you know?
And this name is so bright and so sharp that the sign just blows up because the name is JUST SO POWERFUL…
