The Dirty Scoop: Kazmir/Pena/Crawford Availble Mets Interested

Posted by trs86 on 2:40pm, Tuesday July 28th 2009

According to Joel Sherman the Rays have called the Mets about Kazmir.  Also, according to Sherman the Rays are considering moving any of Pena, Crawford and Kazmir to clear salary for Lee and Vmart.  Hmm…. Could the Mets solve issues for this year and next by making a trade for Kazmir AND Crawford or Pena.  Both Crawford and Pena are under contract for next season and would fill large holes in the Mets lineup.  Kazmir is having a terrible year and injury concerns but if the price is not too high he would be a great gamble for next year’s rotation.

Thoughts?

So anyone in for a 3 way? LOL
    Mets, Indians and Rays?

  2. trs86 says:

Pena is having a down year but the power is still there. .217 .348 .496 .844

  3. trs86 says:

Seriously, why if you are the Mets would you not be interested in all or any of those 3?

  4. fongy2 says:

    Omar could save the season,next&
his job by moving ANY of our minor
    league talents for these three.
If and its a big if,this is true,
    you dont hesitate! FMart,Murp,Niese,
plus, plus and get it done Omar!
It would certainly change the look
and feel of this team for the reat of
‘09 and next season! Are any of the
players in our system gonna be ANY
of these three in terms of production
on the MLB level? Omar should do
whatever is needed to acquire a
package which would include the three
    players mentioned!

  5. trs86 says:

    So what would it take?
I am guessing Niese would go to the Indians, Parnell to the Rays, Fmart to the Rays, Murphy to the Indians?

  6. trs86 says:

Nah nah MC we got the story before you did. LOL.

  7. Mr North Jersey says:

This is exactly the shot in the arm we need this could be something special if done right. Oh I just jinxed it didn’t I?

  8. trs86 says:

I am owning this comment section so I apologize but this makes just too much sense.
Rays get what they want, players salaries cleared AND prospects to soften the blow for them to deal for Vmart, Lee or Halladay. Indians get better prospects than what the Mets alone have. Mets get 2 guys that help for this year and fill huge holes for next. Come on Rubin, write a story about it.

  9. fongy2 says:

These stories just kill old grizzled
Met fans b/c,man does it sound good
to think of those three in Met uniforms only to know it won’t
happen. Joel Sherman has very little
    credibility.

  10. fongy2 says:

I’ll tell ya,ya just gotta give mad
credit to Theo.He just got an interesting former prospect for
Kotsay who wasnt gonna play for
them anyway. Mes think hes up to
somrthing huge and hopefully it’ll be Halladay.theres always a plan
    up there! Omar, please,take notice!

  11. trs86 says:

IN more news, Red Sox have given in and offered Clay Buchholz, Michael Bowden and Ryan Westmoreland to the Blue Jays for Halladay.
Wow that’s a strong offer. Also the RSox just got Brian Anderson, could he be replacing Ellsbury?

  12. stickguy says:

Too bad Omar panicked lat year when the Braves stole Lowe, and resigned Ollie. If he had been smart (or just checked with blog posters that were, right TRS?), and signed some of the 1 year arms going cheap (wolf, marquis, etc.), then he would be sitting pretty to snag a guy like that.

Instead, Ollie is effectively filling the rotation and budget slot that Kazmir could take.

And, assuming Ollie stays, unless Neise goes in the deal, that makes the rotation way too left handed (although maybe that is good for facing the phils?

Kazmirs durability is scary, but what the heck, sometimes you gotta roll the dice.

And hopefully some ML seasoned guys like Murphy and Evans can cover some of the body count to save “real” prospects?

F mart going to bring back Crawford does seem like a no brainer.

  13. CaseStreet says:

Do you think F-Mart can pull this in the next few years?

    99 Runs
    195 Hits
    27 Doubles
    14 Triples
    13 HR
    76 RBI
    55 SB
    .295 BA
    .334 OBP
    .435 SLG
    .769 OPS

    That’s Crawford’s 162 game Avg of 8 seasons.

    • trs86 says:

Nope. Not at all or anywhere close. Those are Reyes numbers.

      • CaseStreet says:

I know F-Mart doesn’t steal, I meant the other numbers.

        • trs86 says:

Even without those steals those are very Reyes like, not to mention the defense. Put his OBP up to .350ish and you have a super star. There is no reason at this point for us to believe Fmart is anything close to those numbers.

          • whataputz says:

There is no reason for this team to hold onto f-mart if he still has any value left. no reason! Clearly he’s not going to be a big power guy, he’s no too fast..he’s a good glove, not great. He’s still a ways to go, why wait for him to develope into a good player at best on a win now team, when they can trade him for a major impact player?

  14. stickguy says:

How about this (TRS might even approve).

Get Kazmir and Pena, if the prospect count isn’t too bad, since you are taking on Kazmirs salary and injury issues.

Then, take RIos off Torontos hands for a B prospect (another salary dump).

Now, that eats up much of the salary coming off the books next year, but it also fills every hole but catcher, and you can do that on the cheap.

You end up with a line up of (in some order):

    Reyes
    castillo
    Wright
    Pena
    Beltran
    Franceour
    Rios
    Catcher

Might not have a fielder/howard level HR guy, but so what? Dont have that anyway.

That line up has 4 guys that have hit 30 HRs (as recently as last year) in a row. And Reyes and Rios have some pop.

Also a ton of speed in there, even toward the bottom of the order. ANd very good defense overall.

ROtation gets sorted out, but if you don’t mind being lefty heavy, Santana, Kazmir, Pelf, Maine, Ollie is not too bad. OK, maybe it is, but can’t have everything!

    • trs86 says:

No I had already thought of that, especially if the Rays were to go after Halladay instead. But either way, Pena and Rios would be great additions. Younger, under team control for after this year…

  15. dentulous says:

would be nice to get Kazmir and Pena. But Kazmir looks like he has issues. I doubt we see anything major happen in terms of trades for this club, but maybe they wanna take the heat off the FO, so who knows?

  16. stickguy says:

Well, should know in a few days if CHristmas is coming early!

And Omar did say in the off season that he had money set aside to add salary at the deadline, right? And he wouldn’t lie to us, would he?

The real hang up of course is how much budget room do the Wilpons provide (next year might be the bigger issue), and of course, how bad is the prospect hit.

But, this is exactly the type of deal (conceptually) I asked for. SOmething to beef up the team for the miracle run, but really filling the pending gaping holes coming for next year.

Making the team younger and better defensively is also a bonus!

  17. CaseStreet says:

Ok, so what are the Mets need right now?

1B - Delgado is supposed to come back early August, but how will he play. Murphy’s defense has improved, but his bat is still lacking.

OF - Shef says he’s ready to play, but he can’t play full time. Beltran says he feels better but his return is less clear. Frency and Pagan have been hot lately.

SP - Maine is no where near coming back. Livan has had a couple of good games since his last poor game and Niese did great replacing Nieve, but can they maintain this performance and is the rotation good enough.

Me, for right now, I’d like to upgrade at OF. Be it Rios, Crawford, or whoever else. Murph can hold the fort till Delgado comes back. Niese should be here to stay, but I’m not 100% sure the rest of the rotation will hold up.

    • whataputz says:

I don’t like Rios because he’s too much of a long term commitment. Enough of these projects. Can we just get a guy who we know can actually constantly play good baseball on a daily basis in lf or rf! I’m sick of these guys that “Can be…. if”. The same thing goes to our pitching staff. I like John Maine, and he has been very good for Kris benson, but enough is enough. The guy just cannot play constant ball without either getting injured, or getting on a major cold streak. We need to get a corner outfielder that can play, I’m willing to re-sign Delgado if he pproves he isn’t done only because there are no 1b fa’s next year. where the Mets need a huge makeover is their starting rotation. johan is johan. Pelfrey is a #3 or 4 pitcher, he just isn’t a number 2. The Mets need another ace caliber pitcher so that everybody can get pushed back a spot. Leys say we can get an oswalt or someone in that caliber this deadline or in the offseason, you can live with johan oswalt pelfrey perez maine. you can re-sign putz and live with this bullpen. They need a real starting catcher. That is how this team will be fixed..a #2 whos really a #1..a catcher…and a corner outfielder.

  18. DNDJohan aka kistics says:

I really see a very good opportunity here. I like Pena a lot. He’s a good defensive 1B and can replace Delgado’s powers. He’s a FA after 2010 season, so I see a good opportunity for the Mets to get him. I heard that he’s a very good influence in the clubhouse as well. He’s 31 years old and should be in his prime for another 4-5 years. Only thing is that he Ks a lot and doesn’t really hit for average. But so is Ryan Howard (granted he has hit few more HRs).

If Rays package Pena with guys like Kazmir or Crawford, it’ll be a really good opportunity for the Mets.

    • whataputz says:

yes, but who do we trade for these guys!

      • stickguy says:

OMar better be finding out! If he isn’t too busy having long sad phone calls with his BFF Tony.

Crawford I think is a poipe dream. He will cost.

But, kazmir they seem to want to dump now that he is having injury probolems. ANd pena is expensive.

So, you are talking about what, 6 mill this year, and 18 mill (roughly) in 2010 for those 2 guys? Frnakly, take the full salaries, and the prospect haul back should not be that significant.

Not sure of course what the Rays want, but if Murphy can be a piece, go for it.

Dont trade Davis though. With any luck, he would be ready to take over in 2011.

        • whataputz says:

I ask this question all of the time when the topic of trading prospects comes up…what is the best case scenario for Ike Davis? He can hopefully one day be a decent power bat and a good first basemen..well Pena is already a great power threat and a very good first basemen. I doubt it will just take Davis to get the deal done.

  19. saltygary says:

I would purposely wet my bed if the Mets get Crawford. My wife might divorce me but I would still have Crawford.

He is the right type of player for Citi field.

  20. asod75 says:

I honestly believe the Mets are going to make some sort of big splash at the deadline, mainly to shift focus away from the embarrassment of the whole Minaya/Rubin press conference fiasco. If they do, let’s hope it’s for just this type of deal, bringing in young vets that still have plenty of tread left on their tires. A few weeks ago, I was hoping to get both Halladay and Rios, but this is just a pipe dream. I don’t think the Rays will deal Crawford but I definitely could see them moving Kazmir/Pena, especially if they can get V-Mart and Lee. Pena’s batting average is down, but batting average is a bit overrated as this guy still draws a lot of walks and hits for power while playing a strong first base. Getting Kazmir back could help erase one of the organization’s many stupid moves over the years. I like it.
