Mets Hot Stove: Abreu

Posted by CaseStreet on 3:54pm, Thursday November 5th 2009

abreu1Bobby Abreu has re-signed with the Angels.

Abreu will be paid $9MM in 2010 and 2011, plus a $1MM buyout of a $9MM option for 2012 that could vest based on plate appearances.

Well, that scratches the Angels from the Holliday/Bay discussion. I would’ve considered Abreu as a LF option, but his defense stats have been pretty poor. I wonder what effect this move has on the rest of the Angels’ Outfielders.

What do you think?

It’s re-signed, my friend. I first read that and thought “Resigned? He quit?” :)

I think the contract sets the market at a reasonable starting point. This won’t effect the Lackeys and Hollidays of the world but the rest of the second tier and beyond free agents will have a tough time arguing for big money after Abreu, who received a lot of praise in helping improve Anaheim’s offense and is still highly productive with the bat, signed for less than what Adam Dunn received last year.

  4. Good for Bobby, he earned it.

I wonder who, if anyone, will be this year’s class of “fall through the cracks” guys and I wonder if the Mets will actually benefit from it this year.

Does this make the Angels any less likely to re-sign (hat tip to Matt Smith) Lackey? I haven’t read anything about their perceived stance on that either way.

  5. For those who like to keep tabs on the Mets budget, macksmets.blogspot.com is keeping track of what he calls the Mets “off season salary savings” and so far that number is at $21,375,000 according to Mack.
