Bobby Abreu has re-signed with the Angels.
Abreu will be paid $9MM in 2010 and 2011, plus a $1MM buyout of a $9MM option for 2012 that could vest based on plate appearances.
Well, that scratches the Angels from the Holliday/Bay discussion. I would’ve considered Abreu as a LF option, but his defense stats have been pretty poor. I wonder what effect this move has on the rest of the Angels’ Outfielders.

I think the contract sets the market at a reasonable starting point. This won’t effect the Lackeys and Hollidays of the world but the rest of the second tier and beyond free agents will have a tough time arguing for big money after Abreu, who received a lot of praise in helping improve Anaheim’s offense and is still highly productive with the bat, signed for less than what Adam Dunn received last year.
Abreu was quite productive this year. He helped my fantasy team to a second place finish coming of my 2008 championship. I guess my team was the Phillies of fantasy.
I guess you had no choice but to root for the Phillies in that instance.
Good for Bobby, he earned it.
I wonder who, if anyone, will be this year’s class of “fall through the cracks” guys and I wonder if the Mets will actually benefit from it this year.
Does this make the Angels any less likely to re-sign (hat tip to Matt Smith) Lackey? I haven’t read anything about their perceived stance on that either way.
I read earlier from one of the pundits that the Angels were “prepared” to move on without him. Not sure what that means.
But with a solid staff of Weaver, Saunders, Kazmir and Santana I don’t think they should act out of desperation.
Thanks for reminding me of Kazmir, his presence on the Angels had slipped my mind. Duh. It’s great for them how cheap and far removed from FA Saunders and Weaver are.
If you’re still out there Wanny I see that Shawn Bowman has been added to the 40 man. Anything about him that comes to mind that you care to share? All I know is he’s a 24 yo 3B who had a pretty solid offensive season at AA. I seem to vaguely recall he had some injury/illness issue?
I only know what I’ve read on BA. He’s had some injury troubles but the team really likes the pop in his bat.
He hit .294 .346 .458 in AA this season in 91 games. The most he’s played since his age 19 year, 5 years ago.
So I guess there’s cause for optimism that he could hit so well in AA with so little experience (despite his age).
Plate discipline was woeful, though. 25 BB and 101ks in 340 at bats.

Interesting that he ranked by whoever the hell nyfuturestars is as a better defensive infielder than Tejada, Davis or Coronado.

Leave it to the Sox to make a pickup like this. Really a nice move for them because they won’t be forced to rely on him — nothing to lose in picking up a low risk high reward player.
He’s insurance for LF and for their ever injured RFer.
The haul is two lefty relievers, one of whom debuted this season for the Sox and another who is a ways away. As far as I can tell neither is expected to be much more than decent.
You mean Lindstrom and Owens? LOL. At least the ones they got this time are LH and young.
