Pelfrey for Halladay?

Posted by trs86 on 11:32am, Monday November 9th 2009

I have seen a couple of rumors by in my opinion not so reliable sources that bring up the idea of trading a current Mets starter in a package to get a #2 pitcher or impact hitter.   As most bored Mets fans do this time of year, my mind wandered into well who could that be?  Johan is not getting traded. Maine’s value is at an all-time low.  Perez is almost what you would call untradeable unless you really eat some cash or take on a terrible contract.  Niese is not even part of the rotation and is coming off injury as is Nieve.  Who does that leave with ANY value?  Mike Pelfrey.  Pelfrey is only 25 (26 to start the season) still under team control for  a few more years and because of his contract is signed for a ridiculously low 500,000 this year.  Those are good reasons to keep him as well as why he may be attractive.  I also read this off-season that perhaps Happ could be used to trade for a more established front of the rotation pitcher.  Although Happ is coming off a great season he is actually older than Pelfrey.

So my question today is would you trade Pelfrey in a package to get Halladay?

I’d like an explanation as to why someone would actually vote no on this.

  2. stickguy says:

I want a button for “maybe” or “it depends”. Depends on the rest of the package!

Pelfrey is the type of guy teams should be trying to get, not trade away. And I honestly think he could have some serious value on the trade market.

If you want to trade him that bad, maybe you can move him for a bat, and then sign Lackey.

would you rather have Fielder + lackey, or just Halladay?

    • DNDJohan aka kistics says:

Good suggestion. It would be great to have Fielder + Lackey, but what if Lackey goes else where and we are left Fielder and no SP? I think the only scenario where Pelf gets traded is if we are getting SP back OR we have already signed a SP who can replace Pelf.

I think Pelf is only expandable if we are getting a SP back.

  3. Wanny made an very thorough list the other day in the comments that I agree with.

The Jays have tons of cheap controllable quality SP in house, in trading Halladay they don’t need to prioritize getting pitching back. They DO need a shortstop rather desperately…

But just in general, WOULD I trade Pelfrey in a package for Halladay? Yes, I would consider it.

I guess the idea would be trade for Pelfrey for Halladay and then sign Wolf.
Halladay, Johan, Wolf, Maine, Perez? with Nieve and Niese if they are still around.
You would have spent about 24 million of your 32.

  5. Well I just read the following in a Toronto newspaper, it is not a quote from anyone so I take it as the columnists opinion:

“The ideal package for Halladay would include a young mid-rotation starter with an upside, a top pitching prospect, a possible major-league shortstop and an outfield prospect.”

So it’s fairly easy to fill in the blanks based on that. Pelfrey, Mejia, Reyes, FMart.

I’m not sure I want to do that for 1 year of Halladay and the “privilege” of having a year’s exclusive negotiating to re-sign him.

The reporter goes on to say that the Tigers “have a puncher’s chance with Justin Verlander.”

If I were the Tigers I’d just hold on to Verlander. Plus I find the idea of them trading Verlander at all, let alone as PART of a package for Halladay, somewhat incredible, and it makes me question the credibility of what he sees as “the ideal package” in the first place.

Yes, Si, 是, Oui, Ja, हाँ, Is ea, Taip, Sim, Tak,

In any language it will always be Yes

  7. As far as the point about “Happ is actually older than Pelfrey” well yeah he is 15 months older.

He also has a better career ERA, WHIP, H/9, BB/9, K/9, K/BB, and alread has 2 shutouts to his credit (Pelf has 0)in 278 fewer major league innings than Pelfrey.

Then there’s Happ’s ML service time being less and therefore his being farther removed from arbitration and free agency.

Happ is hands down the winner in this competition by every measure I can find.

  8. wannybackstra says:

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com polled 20 major league executives on which team they thought would sign John Lackey.

    Yankees 8
    Mets 4
    Angels 3
    Field 5

Following on earlier suggestions of signing Brad Penny or Ben Sheets, there really is no shortage of high-risk high-reward guys among Penny, Sheets, Harden, Bedard and even Smoltz, Pedro and Mulder (though the size of the potential reward is probably not as high for the latter three). None of these guys should be brought in as the sole addition to the starting rotation, however, or even as the main addition.

    • wannybackstra says:

None of the 20 executives/scouts polled by Crasnick believed Felix Hernandez would be traded. 9 of them thought Gonzalez would be dealt and 8 thought Halladay would be dealt.

  9. CaseStreet says:

I voted no, cuz Pelf can and should be a #2 with his sinker. Plus, Doc would be great, but as Grave said above, Lackey can be had for just money.

Now, if we’re talking about prospects, then by all means, see ya.

  10. You know, in reading today’s posts (which are excellent, kudos gentlemen) and therefore reading their comments, I find the comments also to be quite excellent.

They are almost all some combination of informative and challenging.
What exactly is wrong with that and why are we banished from foreign lands, exiled here to comment?

I know we’ve been over that before but as the hot stove debates really kick in I’m struck again by the absurdity of it all.
